View Full Version : Did I just blow up my turbo?

Here's a video with sound of what I think may be a blown turbo. Listen for the sounds in the very beginning of the clip. The symptoms worsened after I pulled over to take the video. I eventually gave up and had my RS towed.

I found the up pipe/turbo bracket hadn't been installed on my ej205, so I put it in. I think I may have used a bolt that was slightly too long and hit the EGT sensor on the up pipe. The little tube coming off the EGT sensor now has some play and is not fixed like it is supposed to be. The first drive after I installed the bracket yielded some funny noises/vibrations followed later by the motor just not running right and sounding like ****.

I'll take the downpipe off and inspect the turbo when I have time next week, but while I wait until then, what do people think happened to my motor?

What do people think? Do I need a new turbo or what is that sound?

CN: Car ran fine but the first drive after I installed the up pipe bracket (and possibly distrurbed the EGT sensor), it runs like crap. Did I inadvertantly send the EGT sensor thru the turbo?

Something is clicking pretty good at the beginning of the video, but then goes away. If it was a bearing it would make that noise constantly. Does the sound get louder as teh rpm's go up?

Yes the noise gets louder with higher load. While driving, it will almost go away when load is removed, but it wasn't consistent. I couldn't figure out exactly what was making the noise before I decided to just have the car towed back home.

Do turbo's make noises like that clicking when going bad?

This would be the sound of a blown turbo, its consistant and constantly clicking, you may have some play in the main shaft, which eventually will lead to a blown turbo...

oh and finally, does it make the noise more when you get on the gas while parked? (just to verify it isnt drivetrain related)

-Also, check your oil lines, you may have a leak and it could be starving the heads, which would also give a nice clicking sound. Could also be a clog of sand, debris or something in the line.

The noise seemed to come and go seemingly randomly. It would increase with throttle application at a stop and while driving tho. It really started to make noise under load, tho.

Sounds lieka broken rocker arm getting mangled by a cam.

There's metal in the oil. I'm almost positive it ate a bearing. Turbo and EGT look fine. It must have just been coincidence that it happened after I installed that bracket.

Definitely ate a bearing, saw your post on RS25.

I would be extremely suprised to see a rocker arm issue on an EJ205!

Just after you got it running! Sorry to hear. Didn't something else just happen with the block as well prior to this?
