View Full Version : 60k on a set of brake pads?!?!?

Its true. My car rolled over 60k, and I'm still on the original brake pads front and rear.

I've been keeping an eye on them closely the last 20k. I knew I could get 40k, then 50k came and went and they we're getting thinner but some meat left on them. Well, I hit 60k last week. I officially declare them all done. There is some material left but the pedal doesn't feel like it should so I'll tackle them bad Larrys within the next couple weeks. w40oT

last week, I heard my shim squeal just a bit on the left rotor. 64k miles was my limit. cut the rotors, and put some Hawk HPS on. amazingly enough, the rears still had about 50% left. and of course the car got traded. :( more waste. ;)

No way on the LGT. The stockers are crap. Mine have 36K on them and are falling apart, which is why I bought my BBK (I needed some reason to justify it ;))

there is a middle grade, It may be called "pro grade", this allows factory rotors and a good length of time.
My 87 has had strong rotors and brakes for years..
in fact this thread reminds me the scratchers could be scratching sometime soon....

I go for middle grade. organics are terrible, metallic/racer/ceramic can even take wheel bearings with the warped oe rotor it created.... :unamused:

maybe Im paranoid.. but I start to get concerned when I go "too long" on brakes. or anything else that wears out. I think all it really is, is Im just such a fan of spending money, though...

My pads NEVER last that long. Maybe I'm not buying the right ones?

Driving style has a huge part to do with it. I have an STI with original pads and rotors and I am at 32k with a ton of life left.

OIC, so if I'm darkening freshly washed wheels in one day with dust, I'm not doing it right?

my friends 05 sti was a garage queen in winter, and despite the mods he had done drove like grammy. so his pads lasted at least 40k. so Id agree.

once I swap my rear axles with wrx axles and have 4 wheel disc Im going to run Hawk HPS pads. 04wagoon has them on his WRX and they've been amazing so far.

I did my 60K check last Nov. on my 05 wrx expecting to put on new rotors/pads. All pads had >60% percent left and rotors measured very little wear. :iam: :D

Hoping to get 100K+ now

JUst had rear pads put on at 56K , the fronts still at 50% thickness.

be careful with grade of pad you get... the best can explode the wrong rotors. (I have done it) metal racer never-dies and dead OE rotor: 1month together..it shattered like glass. The hot rods still at 2500 pound machines probably get away with alot... the giant big bad racing rotor theory on tiny subes is hilarious. I guess it is great for newbs who don't know what downdraft or engine braking is anyway....

I think I squeezed 45k out of the stockers on my '06, but I have a heavy right foot so I'm just as brutal on the brakes. The brakes were doing pretty well on the '99 untill the weather got nice enough for me to wear sneakers and my left foot sees the brakes alot more now  and I've only put about 15k on the '99 since October.

couldn't have said it any better myself

OT, my front pads are going now. They came with the car when i bought it a year ago at 50k, now I'm at 98k. Not too bad for stock replacements, considering i don't know how long they were on there before.

This weekend I should be able to do the braided lines, superblue, slotted rotors, and hawk hps pads.

He sounds like whatsisface who was banned from NASIOC for being crazy. Always going off about how EA engines are still more reliable/efficient/powerful than EJs because they have 3 main bearings instead of 5. That nut came from Maine too...

my LGT has 49K miles on it...i just bought it and am the second owner....& i agree that the stock brakes are crap; i'm already feeling wear on the pads....Summer time will be the time for upgrades!

depends sooo much on how you drive. I mean, you can do the cost/mile ratio on the cheapos but in the end I think everyone here would just rather buy high performance.

Excuse me girls. There is more than one person from Maine on here. Don't generalize, stereo type, assume. Be nice. :D

So, I'm now over 61k, still on the original pads. I'm going to ask my boss if he'll sponsor me some new ones.

I drive like this...Union Fairgrounds RallyX, last Fall.

Yeah youre right, subies dont need big brakes, because you can downdraft and use engine braking...those STi guys just like their brembos because they look purdy..... :unamused:

Mine are squealing in the front. I have about 53k on the oem crap. I have everything I need to change out the oem garbage, just need to find the time. I wasd thinking of also going the ss line route.

Front:
Brakeperformance drilled/slotted rotors $167
Paired with Powerstop Evolution Cleanride ceramics - $25 off ebay.

Rear:
EBC Yellowstuff Paried with EBC 3GD Dimpled/Slotted rotors - $110 off ebay.
