When the turbo spools it sounds like a grinding kazzoo. The check engine and cruise control lights are on too. I'm guessing turbo failure of some sort... Got towed to a shop in the bronx near 95 and the hutch... Gotta figure out how to get it back to efi logics in bethel Ct

Update:

My buddy charlie is an out of work tow truck driver & his buddy just got a flat bed trailer to tow his monster truck so they are picking it up from the shop in the Bronx in the morning & towing it to EFI.

and yes if I have to buy a new turbo, its turbo upgrade time im not buying another stock turbo for it... :)

Wow! That suks dude. Been there done that. At least now you can go with a big turbo and have EFI bolt on all your stage II stuff you have sitting around the house, and throwdown with a tune :D.

Yeah I'm looking into somebody I heard about who will build an 18g out of my turbo for like 750 bucks. I've heard good things and then I can keep a tmic (prolly get a Perrin). Money saved can go for injectors, pump, intercooler, etc I will need. But we still have to see the virdict. My buddy is picking it up in the Bronx and towing it to EFI today...

CTATV

????

No I mean DO put another turbo on the car. Vf40s are garbage and regularly blow up. It's not worth the money or the risk to your engine. I'd say upgrade to the vf52 if you have the cash, you can run stock fueling with the turbo but certainly will not be able to max it out (if you want to stay with the stock tmic). Otherwise if you'd like to go serious, to an wrx/sti fitment unit, fmic (plus supporting mods), and get a turbo inlet :).

Yeah I dont want to slap another stock turbo in there. the 52 is def an option, but I am going to upgrade my intercooler either way (either front mount or perrin top mount) I will have to see what works best in terms of cost and what the guys at EFI say to me after they figure out exactly what happened... STi swap with an STi TMIC & a red intake manifold could be nice. also opens up my options for BOVs

You can always get the adapters if you'd really like to run STI style bpv's or bov's. The STI manifold is deff gangster though . Pssst hence the reason I bought the same setup for my car.

Please be sure to do some research about weakening the turbo housing by machining your housing, it will make it weaker.
+1 (781) 551-3399 you can call these guys at DSG for professional consultation. Its always wise to save the money and buy a turbo as is and not modify the housing in anyway shape or form.

I'm REALLY REALLY not trying to start an argument in someones thread.... Legacygt, please read the thread before you are posting this stuff. Evan full well knows, and has posted the idea of switching to the STI tmic AND mani. And again, while having the utmost respect for DSG, there are plenty of people running hybrid vf40's with 16g, 18g, and 20g variants without failure. And to the best of my knowledge BNR isn't machining housings at all on the smaller hybrids he is producing (I will get confirmation).

hmm good point about the turbo not mounting up to the STi swap if I do go with a rebuilt turbo... I probably will stick with a TMIC either way I would just go to the black Perrin one rather than the STi TMIC

The black perrin in my opinion is the way to go. something like 50% over stock flow.

i just wanted to respond to the lag comment from the other thread. a fmic with an efficient core will not lag anymore than larger tmic, and wont blow apart like an lgt stocker.

Im sure dusty can attest to the lack of 'lag' in his car.

On the other topic, machining any housing larger does weaken it, that is not debatable, pure mechanics there. I DO NOT believe however that it weakens the housing to a point of failure on a street car.

Whatever you do, dont bother with those craptastic stock vf40's :), and good luck!

OK we're in back in business (within 2 weeks) so heres what's going on to the car...

AEM Cold Air Intake
Invidia UP and DP
VF52 turbo (brand new not a used one)
Perrin TMIC (in black)
07 flywheel & ACT street clutch
650cc injectors
Steel Braided brake lines

then EFI is dyno tuning the car for me...

so that stuff is being added to my car that already has

Acess Port (duh need for the tune but i already own it thankfully)
Greddy EVOII catback exhaust
Perrin LCA spherical bushings
BC BR series coilovers
Hawk HPS pads with stock rotors

We will see when they are in there if my pads/rotors are in need of a freshening-up

I find a handful of LGT's when they reach higher miles to really need a fuel pump to get under 11.5 AFR's even when in the low 90 IDCs. There was simply not enough fuel pressure.

VF52 is awesome setup on those, good luck!

yeah me either. Only thing im not doing is the Fuel Pump which would be nice. But I talked to Chris at EFI and he said the walbro pumps have had fitment issues and have left people stranded. If i want to do a pump I should go with the AVO, which is like 400 bucks. That will put me over the 4,000 mark which i really dont feel like passing right now. I got side feed 650cc injectors and the VF52 which he said should be OK with the stock pump. he could squeeze more power out of the car with a pump but I think it will be making plenty more power even without it

U know.. thiose options ALWAYS EXIST... When I replaced my deadbolt with the Garrett I had other options to add (in some cases ALOT MORE) horsies.. IT always came down to what I have in the car, what is left to do and how much more performance do I really need.

I can also tell U from first hand experience that the more horsepower U run with the harder and faster destruction takes place when things go south..

hell yeah. It was OTS stage 1 though so you guys know. Just noticed that it says 2 on your dyno data base :)

that stupid move with the 87 octane worked out OK too. (for those that dont know I was talking to a friend at the gas station and put half a tank of 87 in on a half tank of 93). I bought a bottle of 104 octane boost that treats 25 gallons and put it in there, then drove around for a bit and put another quarter tank of 93 in there. Been driving all day no problems :spin:
