View Full Version : Rough Idle and White Exhaust after new parts?

So I just finished installing my TGV deletes, Perrin fuel lines, 1 step colder plugs, and turbo inlet. I started her up and let her warm up for a few min and she was spewing fuel. I forgot to tighten the hose clamp, ok NBD. Started her up again and then checked things out some more. Hard core white exhaust and a real rough idle. I shut down and looked for leaks of anything and didin't see any. Started her up one more time and she barely started and my CEL came on and my cruise light was blinking. Is this normal since I still need to tune it or is something else wrong?

I'm going to find an OBD2 diagnostic tool tomorrow. This is going to bug me all night.

You should tune if you took the TGV's out, since they work at idle, maybe cold starts, I don't recall.

Cylinder 1 misfire is the code. I checked the plug and it looks fine.

did you spill anything in the tube?
Pull the pack and the plug and make sure they are not fowled

I pulled the plug and pack and they both look fine. I don't think I spilled anything in there. I hope I didn't get any of the old gasket material in there when I was scraping it off.

could be.
Replace the plug, if it still fails do an arc test on the pack

ok I was thinking of swapping 1 and 3 plugs to see if it switches to cylinder 3.

ok. I swapped the plugs and went to start the car up and it wouldn't even turn over. Sick. now what?

You forgot to plug in the maf if you unplugged it?

car will still start with maf unplugged
From what you told me you did a ton of work on it, there could be a million things wrong and i'm not sure anyone here can help you. I'd suggest bringing it to a local shop.

^^^ My Outback started hte first time, rough idle...shut off and wouldn't start again until I plugged in the MAF.

I had a similar issue after changing out my injectors once where it was getting too much much fuel. Basically i swapped the injectors back and took it for an easy drive, after about 15 minutes it was back to normal once the extra fuel was burned.

Are you sure you hooked the fuel lines up correctly? There is a return line, feed line and evap... I would just check and make sure...When i did my fuel lines i hooked them up wrong and my car started ran for awhile ruff and i too got a misfire code..I better you may have flooded the engine..

the MAF is in and the fuel lines should be hooked up right. I am going to try to turn over the engine by hand. If that doesn't work the car is going to the shop... :unamused:

vacuum leak(s)? check all hoses, look under intake, and front of intake....everywhere.

I am going to check the fuel lines again. and again. I cranked it over by hand so, thats nice.

The car started. I ran it for a little bit. It doesn't sound very good. It is still spewing white exhaust and after a little bit, the heat went way up. I hooked all the coolant lines up correctly and there is coolant in there. The car barely wants to run. Could it be the head gasket? I don't know why it would happen after just sitting there for a week or 2. Any ideas?

The temp spike is probably because you never burped the coolant while you filled it. So you have air bubbles which create spikes in temp or temps that sky rocket.
As for the white smoek... well that can be a number of things.
pcv valve
water in engine
oil burning off
too much oil
coolant burning from a head/block leak
etaks99rs
03-23-2010, 07:59 PM
how do I burp the coolant?
Robk0000

with the motor off, and cold. Take the radiator cap off, turbo resivoir cap off.
Add water/coolant to top resivoir while squeezing the top rad hose. You will hear it bubbling (burping) and continue to squeeze, release until its full. Then just do it a little more.
I think you can find a video on youtube, but this seemed to work for me everytime i had to refill my fluid.

cool. I will do that tomorrow. I have been getting feedback on IWSTi and it could be that the spark plug was damaged on shipping. I will find out if it is the plug tomorrow also when I check the new CEL. I switched 1 and 3's plugs so if it switches to 3 then I know that its the plug.

It switched over to cylinder 3. Now I am just waiting on new plugs to see what happens after that.

What plugs, and did you gap them?; if they weren't iridiums or platinums that is.
Still won't explain the white smoke though. What does the "white smoke" smell like? Petroleum, aqueously sweet, or a combination of the two?

well if one cylinder wasn't firing wouldn't it be the unburnt blowthrough from the dead cylinder?

Yeah it was definitely gas spewing out the tailpipe. I could smell it. The plugs are iridium one step colder and I was told that if they are misfiring just to get new ones because they are nearly impossible to gap without damaging the iridium. I am waiting on new plugs right now.

Sorry to hear about the misfortune Tom. Hopefully when you get the new plugs she fires right up.

So, I just went and put the old plugs in both 3 and 1 and it didn't change anything. I ran it for about 15 min to see if it would burn the excess gas out of the cylinder but it just kept coming and the CEL came on and I bet it is a cylinder 1 misfire. I think I am back to square 1. Suckfest. Could it possibly be the coilpack? FML :palm:
Also it hesitated when I tried to move it. I went up the road and back and it barely wanted to go until it hit about 2k rpms. So thats sick...

do you know how to do an arc test? test the packs
etaks99rs
04-01-2010, 03:30 PM
I do not know how to do that. Do I just pull the coilpack off with the plug and turn the car over real quick?
Bu11dogg2
04-01-2010, 03:57 PM
put a small amount of water on the heads (just to make it moist, like a mist) remove the questionable pack. Place it spark side down and have someone turn the car over and see if it arcs to the heads.
I really suggest having somone who knows how to do it, do it for you ;)

you would absolutely know if it was running on 3 cylinders with a bad coilpack, it will sound and rev like death.

04-01-2010, 06:31 PM
You could swap the coilpack with one that you know is working and see if anything changes...
I had a similar problem. my issue was my injector got stuck open flooding the cylender...have you done injectors reacently?
etaks99rs
04-01-2010, 09:29 PM
Yeah that is definitely a possibility. I did fuel rails and had to swap injectors from the old to the new. Something could have happened with an injector maybe.

SUCCESS!!!! I took out the #1 injector and sure enough the black filter wasn't on correctly. I fixed er up and plopped it back in there and VOILA! the car is running awesome! ish. It needs a tune for sure. I am waiting on the new plugs to come in which will be here SOON! Other than that... Booyah! I'm so stoked!
