Im actually thinking about building a new computer after I get the money, anyone have and ideas on what I should put in it. I need a processor, PSU, motherboard, ram, video card for high gaming use, and possibly a case.

My two cents...
SLI: I dont buy it... GHEY that U can take two vid cards, strap them together and only effectively double UR RAM; I go witn ONE huge vid card with alot of RAM: I have a nasty Sparkle for sale with 1742mb of Video memory
Power supply: Plan for the future, I know lots of fo' who upgraded video cards or processors to find out their PSU won't push it all and they need a new one.
Hard drive: This isnt porn so bigger IS NOT better. I typically will compromise size for performance considering how cheap storage is now.. My wifes PC has a 128GB solid state hard drive, it is ignorant how fast it accesses info. I have one of the new 15,000 ( I think) RPM Raptors, it is no where near as kwik as the wifes solid state but is the second fastest in the house...
RAM; FAST RAM but not a ton, the price will drop in a month..
Mother Board: GO FOR IT HERE... it is the fabric that holds UR pieces together; I always get the nastiest MoBo I can afford knowing it is one of the most ANNOYING pieces in a PC to replace.
Network/sound: I always use the onboard sound and NIC card. There is NO chance in hell a PC stereo system will have anything on real home stereo IMHO. I pretty much use a USB headset for gaming and ventrillo. The onboard 10/100/1000 network card will always and forever be faster than any internet connection a mortal user will ever see..
case: They are black, metal and have holes for fans... Other than added cooling it isn't kewl looking or fun to buff out like our subies...
OS: I hate Vista, XP is old so whats left... 7 and might as well make it 64 bit as drivers are easier to find and mine flys..

cyrix? lol
I figured that was the response I'd get lol
They're an oooooold school processor manufacturer.
In all seriousness, as for AMD vs Intel... Stock performance is about the same (if comparing similar chips in terms of clock speed & cache). If you don't plan to OC, then pick whichever (AMD is usually cheaper, so that's why many people sway towards them). If you do plan to OC, that's where things get hairy. Personally, I find Intel's MUCH easier to OC and get stable (ya ya I know AMD still holds the highest LN2 OC, but compare air cooled and I can guarantee you'll be able to hold an Intel higher without ridiculous voltage and subsequently ridiculous temperatures), whereas others find AMD's easier. I'd really do some serious research on the OC'ing forums if that's your goal before making a descision.

Although a die-hard AMD user primarily based on $$$$ I have run across a couple isolated incidence of AMD and USB NOT getting along well with devices...
I also usually do not OC my PC until the very end, when I get a new one usually the processor is fast enuff that I am happy for while and dont wanna toast it..

there is many routes. some stay brand name like rice to ricer...
I started liking computers after the prescott. Pin grid array is prerequisite.
to go brand new and gamer, and not killing yourself over 1 grand fried...
the am3 sockets with ati vid, and just one card. The double stuff is ridiculous. By the time a 64bit width agp is caught up to.. blah, I won't go nerd with facts.
There is a cheaper route, play it smart.
Ie: I am runing 3400 presoctt with windows 7 on an ati3650 in an "old" agp (last revision). It is just now just curing some hopleess errors with wndows 7 running good by default..it's third os in 6 years.
I build many..just delivered one last night to my bro. Happy again just to have a computer up to date.

My last build in 05 I went the SLI route. I enjoyed it.. until I updated my monitor.
SLI doesn't just team up the memory, there is a few different modes you can work with that will change how the cards work togeather. I can say it IS worth it, but only under EXTREME conditions. I will tell you when I was running a CRT monitor in a lower resolution I was getting over 200+ FPS in CS:S w/ all the graphic settings set to high.
Changed to a bigger widescreen LED monitor, and went for the high resolution, it dropped down to 70fps :unamused:
Granted my video cards are old, and wasn't the greatest. At the time DirectX 10 cards where about to be released so I just went with 2 nivida 7600 GS 512MB DDR3 .. lol this was back in 2005
I would skip the SLI and crossfire setup, and get one crazy hard as mentioned. for the whole nivida vs ati thats up to you. I had success with both makers.
Hard drives I would say is the bottle necker.
I was running a 36GB Raptor drive just for the OS
and 2 250GB Sata2 drives in a RAID-0 config for all of my games, movies, music, data in general
Raptor drive died last year :( However hard drive tests did show the raptor 10k drive and the raid setup was very close in benchmarks.. I forgot what had the higher rating, I think the RAID setup won
You could go crazy and get a solid state drive, but thats $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Motherbord deff dont skimp. I'd research along with all the other components. When I got my Epox mobo (mistake 1) I didn't know the 570 nvidia cipset only ran both video cards in x8 instead of 16x like the 590 chipset did. The whole overclocking thing, well thats up to you if you want to get into that. I did a little, mostly just tighten memory timing.
the whole amd vs intel
up to you, i like amd, but I also like intel
amd is normally cheaper, uses less power, what I really like about their processors.
However, I would pay more attention to front side bus speeds, and amount of L2 L3 cache it has over clock speed.
Seems like both out do each other every other year. After the core2duo and the quad processors came out, intel was defiantly the way to go. I looked at some AM3 socket AMD processors and was very impressed
for PSU You dont need a crazy kilowat power supply, I like the enermax noisetakers PSUs Dual fan setups are nice. I have a 650W, with 32A on the +12V rails, it makes me happy.
and for cases.. I can give two craps less on what it looks like lol.
I have a kingwin case and even though its a bit heavy. its sturdy, and the two 120mm fans it came with is nice and also quiet. Up to you if you want tooless case too. Can make life easier some times lol Just dont get a case with a PSU, those tend to go fast I find.
oh and newegg.com FTW!!!
this thread reminds me I need to upgrade my computer.. damn car takes all my money and fun time now..

I wanna say it's a 17 inch and what I'm thinking about getting is a ati 5770 , 4 gb of ddr3 dunno what exact type yet, dunno the mother board or processor though I know its gonna be an am3 or most likely a i5 quad core, probably a 650 or 700 Watt power supply and maybe a 32gb or 16 gb ssd and I've got a case so wont need that

ooo sexxy
I was on new egg this past week, cross referencing parts with tech data..
Because tech data is the biggest peace of **** of computers parts site there is.. But my company uses them.
I found some nice combo deals on am3 socket mobos with the processor
I am still running one of the 1st 2ghz dual core processors AMD put out in 2005 along with 2GB PC2-6400
So i need to really get my **** together and upgrade my damn crap. However the past few years I haven't been that much into gaming like I was. I dont really spend my weekend nights playing until the sun comes up anymore

Just a suggestion don't get the iPad its just an oversized ipod lol try and get an actual laptop or something like that cuz depending on why you would use it , it kinda defeats the purpose because you can't do anything on them

I also saw Silent Hunter 5 came out
I am a nerd to this game and will play hours on end
I swear if this video card gets delivered today, am downloading this on this office's 100mb burst fiber connection, burning it to a dvd, and do the whole
I have X amount of hours to play this game until I fall asleep for X amount of hours, then work X amount of hours, only to play the game X amount of hours tomorow
