Oh please. There can only be one port in the storm, and that's the U.S. Coast Guard. Hell it's our slogan you ripped off bastard lolz. When hurricanes shut down ports, we go out. When storms ground the U.S. Navy, we go out. When god himself comes down and rips roofs off house, we go out. (cough)

The line: "We are the port in the storm", actually comes from our commercials. It's on posters and other advertisements for the Coast Guard as well. It's been around for just about as long as I have been in the Coast Guard. Long before the movie came out.

FYI, I also met the cast of "The Guardian" while I was assigned to a unit in Washington D.C. during the time the movie came out. Most of my unit was at the world premiere of the movie that was held down the street from the White House. I was in full dress uniform and escorted a beautiful looking actress named Mila Kunis (of "That 70's Show" fame) down the red carpet.

No those aren't in the posters, that's strictly from the movie. Mila Kunis was funny, I have her autograph on a Family Guy dvd set. Yea that's right, I brought the dvd set with me in my uniform because I knew I was paired up with her for the evening. Pretty sweet deal. She's a really funny gal.

Or in my case, 4 years ~ok~

We may have the bragging rights of going out when you guys go hide, but you guys have far cooler TV commercials. Granted they're centered around the more "glamorous" Naval professions (spec ops, pilots, etc. etc.), they're still set to some pretty badass music.

How do you ground the US navy? You mean dock right?

The Navy has Rescue Aviators (Helicopter Pilots and such). The Navy doesn't dock for storms, nor does the Coast Guard. In fact if we are docked and a large storm is inbound we will get underway and move the ship to an area where there is no storm.

Long story short, the quote was implying the flight aspect of the Navy.

I was joking around the other day and said if a big storm comes why don't we just sink our boats then bring them back up. he said ppl have acutally done that. makes sense, i think.
well one of our boats a few years ago i'm told almost flipped in the mouth of the merrimack.

don't think the CG or navy would be up for it.

Doesn't that cause damage to the actual boat? Makes no sense to me, unless they're going to make money from insurance and are pulling a scam. Me = Confused.

I'd be up for sinking our cutters right now, dam things are 40 years old and break down more then anyone should ever hear about.

The Navy pilots do not have the coastal experience or foul weather flight experience of the CG. If the weather gets bad enough, we wont fly. Also, with bad storms, the Navy ships will normally be sent free and clear of the weather...Halsey found this one out the hard way in WWII. Little ships and big waves dont mix very well. With the exception of the carrier, our helos are on small boats.
