Ok, so I have had a rear differential problem in my 97 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5 for a little over a year now. After a long night out with the girls and getting stuck in the mud at 5am; I find out about a week later that there is this weird noise coming from my car. It is like a grinding coming from the back. I take it to the shop to have it looked at and they tell me that I need a wheel bearing, so I get that done. Then I go back a day or two later and tell them that it’s still making the noise and they look at it again.
He tells me that I need a CV shaft in the other side. Now, he is doing all this to the front end of the car mind you. Even though I have told him that I hear and feel the grinding in the back.... All he says to me is that sometimes it feels like the back but it's not. So I say "whatever" and pay him.
Well I come back again the same day and say that I want my money back for this because it is bull that he is telling me one thing and I keep telling him where I hear it and he doesn’t even look in the back of the car. So he gives me back half of my money and I say, "Screw this" and I take it to the Subaru dealership.
They tell me that I need a Rear Differential. I say, "Ok" and now a little over a year later it was still doing this. I found this site and another one with some people selling the part that I need pretty cheap at that, so I was excited. And said now that I have baby #3 on the way I need to get this fixed because it scares me to drive my car.
Well about 2 weeks ago my boyfriend and I are on our way to work and I hit a pot hole. The next day while we are driving around corners, we were confused.... The noise had stopped and the grinding was no longer there.
So this has me very confused and I wait about a week and call the Subaru dealership that told me that I needed a rear Diff and who would have thought that these things can fix themselves. He had told me that most of the time, when we hit something or get stuck it can throw those gears off track and they just need a little hit to knock them back into place.
Now I’m just worried because it was doing it for over a year. Could it have ruined something in there? Or should I just leave it alone till something goes wrong? I’m just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this happening? It is just too good to be true because at this time I am pregnant, trying to look for an apt to move to and Christmas is coming so this has saved me at least $500+ and I am thankful and confused at the same time......
