Wanted: $250 BABE Rally Car

I'm seriously considering entering the 2008 BABE Rally (http://www.baberally.com) next Memorial Day weekend. The search is starting for a suitable car that could make a 3000 mile round trip, preferably without breaking down.

The rule is to enter a car purchased for $250 or less. The spirit of the rally is to enter the rattiest piece of trash that can make the distance. This year there was an old ambulance [Cannonball style]. A contender for 2008 is working on an old German VW Rabbit that looks like it already self destructed.

Not looking hard for a car yet, but always amused to see what can be had in this price range. Ideal car will be a later 80s Japanese brand with a manual gearbox & minimal work needed for inspection. Would love an 80s Accord, Corolla FX, Tercel/Corolla 4WD wagon, Subaru GL, B12/B13 Sentra, etc.

Recently there was a local 1988 Mazda MX-6 with 210k asking $350. If all else fails a friend has a 1995 Legacy L wagon manual with 300k that she could sell for $250.

Looks like a fun event. A few of you should get your own team together. :)

I'd start hitting up The Want Ad. I spotted two '82 Rabbit Diesels in there last week for $250/bo each. Ride in style for several thousand miles with your closest Trashwagon buddies and enjoy 55mpg along the way.:)

I sent a email to ask about this thing. It's for sale in Dover. 1985 900 Turbo, 138k miles, lots of new parts. But they're asking $600, might not come down to $250. :)

Alright, well, I can't keep it in any longer. I've not picked up my new BABE banger, as it'll be a few weeks before the title is straightened out, but let's just say it's a car to which LordBass, Unsakred and myself are infinitely familiar as I've owned it before.

Needs a bit of everything, and has 194K miles now(as opposed to 168K when I sold it 3 years ago), but the body is still fairly rust free, and the grand total price of *$200* makes it eligeable for BABE and GRM's $2008 Challenge.:)

We shall see... I could always just run it as is, as I'll have some paid vacation built up by then either way... it'd still beat the aircooled VWs in the drags.:) Budget concerns might make the $2009 Challenge a better bet.

A 5EFE Tercel will never win there, but a turbo swap, Whiteline bits, R compounds and some rattlecan paint would go a long way.
