Custom fiberglass work

-III
06-29-2010, 08:49 AM
Alright, so Sunday I went shopping to get a few supplies:

mixing containers
fiberglass cloth
paint brushes
fiberglass resin

Still need to get:

fiberglass mat
hardboard or MDF (haven't decided)
body filler aka bondo
face masks
acetone
more mixing containers (6 more than likely won't be enough)
sand paper 80, 120, 150

Should be getting to this today, and then I will get the ball rolling.:spin:

You can see speaker rings behind the panel. Still figuring out how I'm going to fit them and keep the pocket and look clean.

This last batch had too much hardener in it:

I hate it when that happens. Only add a little mekp when its hot outside and work fast. But as far as the mat goes, I like to tear the chop mat instead of cutting it into strips. The edges blend better as well as less sanding. Your making good progress so far, keep it up.

What do you have for equipment that will be going in?

me too. :D

Love the glass idea. it has a deeper resonance eater than oem.

with an old sube, I was gonna snip out that pressed cardboard door interior for thick auto urethaned (2 to 1 mix ought to be hard enough...) luan from malaysia. Flat piece, easy fix...maybe take my mind off the 20 gage b-pillars a little bit more...
anyway, nice work. Alot of ways beyond oe ways, is a better way.

blaahh. Id hate that. get everything all in and set and find out ones blown/blowing..

someday I'll find some better speakers and such for my car. probably nothing near as good as your setup is going to be  but my stock speakers prooooobably wont make it much longer the way I listen to music...

-III

The setup is running in my car now. Just figured it should sound sexy and LOOK sexy too!

I hope it's the crossover that's messed up. Getting new ones would just be an upgrade/easier to tune the music.

Next project is going to be 6x9 in the rear deck!

Can you say 10+ speakers in my car in the near future?

Mooooar sanding:spin:

Then a little more fiberglass to ensure perfection.

-III
07-07-2010, 10:07 PM
Alrighty, I got like 95% of the sanding done on the fiberglass today. Too bad it got dark out and I WILL NOT do the sanding inside.

I started sanding by hand but i was getting NOWHERE and fast, so I went out and got some sanding equipment for my Dremmel. WOW that was such a great idea! Why didn't I think of it the first time???:unamused:

So anyways, my driver's side required a lot less sanding. Maybe because I did that side first when laying down the fiberglass. Resin started hardening and the passenger side came out like crap. Will need a semi re-do on it.

So plan for tomorrow will be to finish sanding drivers side, fiberglass passenger side, and touch up drivers side if needed. Then more sanding. FTW

I was really hoping to have this at least 85% done by Saturday for Boomer's car show. Maybe I shouldn't have slacked off yesterday?

And fiberglass is a little itchy!

Yeah just a bit. When I grind fiberglass I try to cover up as much as possible. I don't care if its 100 degrees outside I put on a jacket that I use just for sanding and grinding glass.

-III
07-08-2010, 12:23 AM
Yea, I thought about it, but I didn't follow through. I didn't itch while doing it, probably from concentrating. I hosed off my arms then showered. Took care of most the itch.

07-08-2010, 08:29 PM
hey man i like the work your doing:D....not to chime in too late but i used to do custom audio for quite a few years... in case you decide to do door cards again at some point or a sub enclosure or anything for that matter one trick to save a lot of fiber glassing is to use a thick 100% polyester fabric..(kind of looks like fleece) where it look like you may have used t shirt material? i think from looking at the pics anyway.you can get it at walmart or anywhere for like 2 dollars a yard. when you spread the resin on it it turns it into sort of a plastic and doubled up it holds subwoofer pressures without stiffening it with glass....saves you from having to use glass and if you stretch it properly you can just sand it smooth and paint or cover it:)
just passing on years of trial and error....but again it looks awesome!

-III
07-08-2010, 09:14 PM
Thanks for the info!

-III
07-09-2010, 01:26 PM
So basically right now I am doing some touch-ups with fiberglass where there were big bubbles. Using small amounts of resin with lots of hardener to do it quickly. If all goes well, I should start to Bondo today and have it primed.

For my first time using fiberglass I think I am doing fairly well. Glad I did my research first.

Pics of work to come.

Bu11dogg2
07-09-2010, 01:56 PM
I def prefer bondo over fiberglass, unfortunately that's not always feasable :(

Buy a small tube of filler bondo!

You're gonna have pits in it because of the heat.

-III
07-09-2010, 02:17 PM
Thanks! I did not think of that.

-III
08-01-2010, 06:43 AM
Recently I got the itch for more power. So I picked up a Megan Racing 3'' downpipe, 1 step colder plugs, and a Grimmspeed Boost Solenoid. I have a few more parts I'm planning on picking up before they all go in at once.

Looking for a quality uppipe and turbo inlet. Also a 255lph fuel pump.

As for the door panels, it's been almost a month since I've touched them. Working so much and being lazy haven't helped me at all.

-III
08-11-2010, 08:43 PM
Got bored today and decided to undercoat my car.
Went out bought some Undercoat/Sound Dampener, ran out before I knew it. But while I was out I also picked up a can on Engine Enamel Spray Paint.

This is what i did:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs267.snc4/39703_424214512883_656402883_4697995_7492411_n.jpg

Also did the BCS cover, but I think I will be doing another few coats when I have more sunlight. And find other things to paint such as all the yellow crap in there.

Looks good! Can't wait to see it once all the yellow is green.

Yesterday, my brother, cousin and I started to install the parts I collected for my go fast.

We started with the DP, easy piece to install/remove.

Before we packed up for the night, we were just about wrapping up the install of the uppipe. This is a job I do not care to do twice. The OEM uppipe gave me so much grief in my attempts to remove it. I would recommend to anyone doing the uppipe in their drive way, to raise the engine to give you the extra inch of room you need to rotate, tug, and rip that POS out of there.

Plan for today is to tighten everything up on the uppipe (so much easier to get my Invidia in there than it was to take out the OEM) and right side manifold, reinstall the DP, and then get my 1 step colder plugs in there.

I was going for a 3-5 hour install. That didn't happen. Took 5 hours yesterday, and still have to do spark plugs and torque everything down. Then drive it with hopefully a nice spool up!:D

I should have taken pictures, but I was so preoccupied trying to actually do work.

Thanks!

So after Bren told me my front o2 wasn't reading, I went ahead and ordered a new OEM one.

I had let my cousin borrow mine while he was doing a WRX swap to see if that is why it hadn't been starting. Not the case. But I was too lazy to get it back. Instead he gave me a Perrin RSB in trade and I'm going to make him install it for me when I get Perrin's Stout Mounts:D

Still need a Walbro 255, and a retune! Should be some minor improvements over the current tune.

It would if I had it on. Mine also came with stickers. If yours did, you could just put the stickers on the duct

I've thought about it, but I think I want to buy a second set of headlights and attempt a retrofit with FX-35 bixenons.

Black Friday I received an OEM afta maf from Yaya for a new to me APS 65mm which I should have this Friday!

And a SpeedTech exhaust is on the list.

I need a retune!!!

-III

How long did it take you to do it?

Berge56
11-30-2010, 09:25 AM
Well it was my first time and I was scared to screw up so I took my time. Plus I wasn't driving the car at the time so I had all the time in the world. If I had to guess it prolly took me a total of 8-10 hours.

-III

You can get a complete kit (projectors, ballast, bulbs, shrouds and harness for like 350).

My brother used their FX-R kit and it turned out fantastic.

I've been on theirr site a while back. I was going to do a retrofit on my Saab but a spare set of lights was wayyyy to expensive.

I don't think I should need a second set of lights for the bugeye with all the write ups on retrofitting

yaya
11-30-2010, 09:52 AM
It can totally be done in a day. We did my brothers in about 4 hours, but it was my third time doing it.

The biggest thing is make sure you have everything aligned correctly, just check several times along the way.

My buddy just replaced his stock brakes with Hawk hps pads and centric rotors. They were very affordable and seemed to have great stopping power.

Personally, I have used cryo stop and DBA 4000 rotors and hawk HPS pads. DBA 4000's are all I use now.

well i have to say then you have to see it and make sure its has no shaft play and ask for a pic in the inlet and the wall of the inlet of the turbo as well so you can see what they look like and a pic of fins and ask them were they got it from ?

What about me fixing your fender liner with one I found in the snow (that happened to be from a Subaru)? That was like the most important thing we got done all night! It was so intense it required me to take a break for 90% of the time you guys were working after I installed it (zip-tie custom special style).

Haven't done too much driving, but it doesn't fall on every bump in the road like the blown struts. Also, I think you're asking about the Perrin radiator shroud I painted green.

No, I'm just saying in general, what do you want from your car? What's important?

For example for me it'd be something like (in order):
response/feedback
comfort
handling/brake performance
economy
power performance
looks

For you and your bro it'd be something like:
being a cop magnet
stereo
looks
power
handling/braking performance

Soul Shinobi

If he's done suspension modding, good tires will hide imperfections and suspension quirks. He might want steering rack bushings or and ALK or something first. Just sayin'.

DHGurs
02-14-2011, 11:16 PM
Tires have the biggest effect on handling and braking out of anything you can do to your car. With that awesome suspension, he should go all out and get great track tires too. Good tires would amplify suspension imperfections, crappy tires would hide them.

Soul Shinobi
02-15-2011, 12:33 AM
More grip's still gonna make at-limit quirks harder to discover. The tires he's got now actually look pretty nice, he's got time to burn those up. :)

I somehow missed this post, but out of all 5 of us I have the most powahh, best stereo, best looks (Mike can't even compete with that fender) close to if not best braking (I know Paige has SS lines but the WRX brakes are still an improvement over those Legacy) probably the least economical, really comfortable now that the suspension isn't dead, and handling is a tossup between Paige, Mike and myself (Mine must be adjusted). And my car runs. Did Jojo make it on the list? :hide:

umm what?

Power we will be just about even (same engine, same supporting mods... I will be tuned next week...)
handling, I have Would beat you... sorry.
Feedback and response goes to Paige and/or nick.
looks. Well, none of us. (also sorry to say I think yours rates below mine and Paiges(If he stopped driving through the gate) on this front.)
Stereo, Paige wold give you a run for your money if he would just PAY for a sub.
Brakes, I guarantee Paiges brakes are better. Sorry to burst your bubble.

However: that is Not at all what nick was saying, he didn't want to compare your car to any other, he just wants to ask you what you care about MOST for your car.

No, jojo didnt make it on the list. he has more power then paige or nick. but no brakes, no handling(save for a forester ALK which is leaking), Looks, he would have if he took off the light rack(though this is the most open to opinion.)
