After going to stage 2 recently and running 18.5psi boost i got my first boost leak! I was so excited :D it's like my car just hit puberty. I lost about 5-7psi on wot so when i got home i Took the intercooler off and the big hose on the driver side was coming off on the engine side of it. I knew this because when i unclamped the big hose on the intercooler side and pulled the intercooler off the hose came with it :bull:

So now that my little suby is growing up is there like a birds and the bees talk i should have with it?

Should i put it on birth control or something?

What signs should i look for about drug usage?

No need to give the Subie a talk. Just keep a careful eye on her. Make sure she doesn't turn into a hoe.:pedobear:

Hey mine did the same thing but I haven't found the leak yet. I was running 19.5psi now I'm lucky to hit 16-17psi. I think she's cheating on me! o.O

time to stock up on hose clamp. when mine hit 20psi hoses started comming loose all over. i had to put 3 on a T fitting. once i clamped oneside another would pop off.

But seriously now i have a problem :D i took my car to the autoshop and worked on it some, bought some clamps and put them on previous trouble spots and whatnot, then when i was driving home i went wot and popped the big hose off the intercooler, so i drove it back then re-attached it and clamped it damn good, but now when i hit 5psi i hear a howling sound like a ghost, and 10psi+ it sounds like an accordion, so i have a ghost with an accordion in my engine. any thoughts on how i could identify where exactly the problem is?

Get her hooked on the Meth. My baby girl is 14 this year and going through some changes. Her sibling was born with the condition but it's developing for her only now and she's starting to notice there are extra parts around and a few things different then all her friends. I just reassure her that though she's becoming different, that everyone's different and there's nothing wring with what's happening. She may get a little
Outcast at times but once others get to knw her they'll just be amazed.

did you blow/break the big hose?

Fc
07-09-2010, 02:58 AM
It doesn't appear to be broken. After some research i think its the intercooler itself needs to be replaced. On the Legacy the intercooler has plastic tanks on the sides where the hoses connect and are connected to the metal cooling part by a series of small metal hooks. Up here in Germany i can't find any JB weld to fix the issue so i guess my only other option is to replace it......... with a FMIC!!!

hrmm, looking at the amount of work i would have to do to get one in i might just go with an AVO or Perrim TMIC, but i'll make the decision while i'm deployed. for now i might put a ratchet strap around the stock intercooler to keep it together :D or daisy chain a bunch of clamps just to make sure it doesnt come apart on my wife while im gone.

you prolly blew the sides out :(

Upgrade to a Perrin TMIC or FMIC

Hey now, no sad faces! when a stock part breaks it just gives me an indisputable reason to replace that part with a performance part :D

but yes thats exactly what must have happened, i just hope it holds while im deployed :X since the wifey is driving it

you REALLY need to replace it.

If she hits boost you will be sending unmetered air right into the intake mani.

Buy a stock used one for $40

Could you explain this to me a bit more? I'm a bit confused cause if it's in boost doesn't that mean there is a positive pressure and it would be pushing air out? so the car would just run rich right? or is there something i'm missing?

Also the probability of me finding a used stock intercooler in Germany is slim to none, Subarus up here are almost non-existent.

But if i order a new one i wont waste money on a stock one and get the perrim or avo, (i like the way avo looks but is perrim just better?) and have her put it on when it gets here then i'd have to have her run it without a fresh tune for it...

Ok so this is an LV shot for the past few days when the boost leaks started, now i can almost confirm that some exhaust sounds where causing the low rpm timing adjustments, i fixed them a few days ago and didn't reset the ecu and the timing has been coming back since then. but other than that there isn't anything out of the usual and the timing is coming back.

Seraphinwolf

It won't read the right amount of air. Too rich is bad as much as too lean is. Flooding an engine won't get you very far when it fouls the plugs, seizes, and have to still replace the IC but a few more things also.

That makes sense.

ok so in theory it would be fine to run if we didn't go into boost? or into boost very often?

the reason i ask is with the SI drive in intelligent (that's what my wife uses) you make a conscious effort to get into boost, and if you do accidentally go into boost (accelerating onto the highway) you usually are only getting 1-3psi, with the SI drive in intelligent and pedal on the floor you can get 7-10psi. and she never does that only I do :D

then my second question is, lets say in Intelligent mode before the boost leak, im getting 7-10psi on wot (disregarding the fact that you cant wot in I mode), then after the boost leak you wot in I still getting the 7-10psi cause that is in fact the case. that just means my turbo is working harder right?

third question. Now assuming my second question is correct, do you think the turbo is working outside of its normal operating ranges to achieve the 1-3psi target boost that my wife would getting it to?

The reason i ask is that I'm deploying sooner than i could get parts to replace anything. so i'm kinda trying to figure this out, also do you think that clamping the intercooler together would make a difference? that makes sense to me that it "could" right now im willing to try anything :D

Seraphinwolf

No te turbo isn't working harder. The turbo only makes what the engine's exhaust flow allows. The engine only makes as much exhaust as the incoming air flow allows. And the incoming airflow is being messed with by the leaky IC.
Clamping may help but not a fix. Kinda one of those fixes you use to get to a shop and that's it.

Ok, looking at my tune i can safely say in I mode i always hit target boost, in Sport sharp mode at wot i'm down 3psi, looks like i'm running 17.5 not the 18.5 i previously reported and i still get almost 15psi now. and in I mode it should not exceed 8psi at wot, in normal driving like i said before you almost never go into boost in I.

ahhhrg i just wish i had more time for a real fix...

so my clamp idea worked, here is how i did it :D

STEP 1 bunch-o-clamp!
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs070.ash2/36838_111755632206903_100001174006218_69735_412421 6_n.jpg

Step 2, apply tourniquet to stock IC

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs150.snc4/36838_111755622206904_100001174006218_69732_281361 0_n.jpg

Step 3, apply clamps and cut tourniquet

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs130.snc4/36838_111755625540237_100001174006218_69733_750291 9_n.jpg

Step 4, profit!!!

no more sounds or boost leaks, hitting all target boost now. so i think i'll let the wife drive it around untill i get back from Qatar and replace it with an AVO then.

BTW i made it to Qatar this morning :D its really hot...
