Iv'e encountered this problem before with past Subaru's, usually being a dirty crank sensor or a/f 02 sensor malfunction. Iv'e got an '01 legacy outback, 5spd, just replaced the front a/f 02 sensor, knock sensor, & cleaned the cam & crank sensor, when driving the car after warmed up for 5+ minutes, if I engage the clutch at a stop, the idle drops right out of sight, sometimes stalls, other times, corrects itself and idles back to normal. What could be the problem, no cel on, honestly drives excellent, just wants to stall. Maybe a bad ground, I did notice most of the grounds on the engine have either rust or some corrossion but I see that all the time and never experience any problems....??? Maybe the throttle position sensor, idle sensor....

No maf, correct. No codes thrown, it had a code for the knock sensor, but was lacking power under acceleration which led me to believe it was really the 02 sensor which screws everything up, like I said I changed the 02 & knock sensor & cleaned the cam/crank sensors. When the car is running cool or while not driving it, the idle is right where it should be and causes no problems, only when I come to a stop & fully engage the clutch and/or when it's warmed up, The plugs, wires, fuel filter and some other miscelaneous parts have all been replaced or serviced recently. I don't want to adjust the idle because I'm worried it will idle to high and cause problems, the last subi that had an idle issue, I adjusted the idle up to almost 1000rpms and still didnt fix the problem.....

try taking a toothbrush, and some brake clean or throttle body cleaner. take the "torque box" off of the throttle body. hold open the throttle plate, and scrub and spray inside the throttle body everywhere the plate contacts.

Throttle body is clean with new air filter. Iv'e been driving my car today and it will not stall anymore but it will idle down to 250rpms then correct itself, but I noticed when I turn the A/C on the idle went up to between 750-1000rpms depending on how warm the engine is, on my other subi, '02 impreza, when I turn the A/C on the idle goes up but comes back down after a few seconds, I'm thinking maybe it is the idle sensor or throttle position sensor???

if there was a problem with the sensors, there should be a code. did you clean the throttle body, or just look at it? it will look clean if you just take the filter off and look inside. you need to open the flapper, and clean the black/brown crap off the throttle body inside. the minute amount of build up will throw off the "zero" throttle reading by the ECM.
