Alright as some of you know i like doing amateur photography for fun specially at car shows of cars and of women on cars

Some of the examples of my style include

As some of you have seen i own what camera companies call a "Advanced Point and Shoot" even though consumers still call it just a fancy looking point and shoot

its a Sony H5
http://imshopping.rediff.com/pixs/productsearch/product_images/digital_camera/Sony_DSC-H5.gif
it was top of its class when it was new. I loved it and used it for 3 1/2 years proudly.

But i been recently picking up the urge to finally step up my game and move up to the world of DSLR's and wondering which one i should buy
My price range is $1k or less unless you can really really make me wanna buy something a lil more expensive

I've briefly used some DSLR's in the past from friends but still have very very very lil knowledge about them.
And since some of the best photographers in New England are on this forum i have confidence people can point me in the right direction

Nikon D5000 if you don't want to break the bank. Nikon D90 or Canon 50D if you don't mind spending some $$$. The D5000 will be cheaper so you have more money for a nice lens.

For the Nikon: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/615725-REG/Nikon_25454_D5000_Digital_SLR_Camera.html

And if you feel like spending the extra money: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/606792-USA/Nikon_2183_AF_S_Nikkor_35mm_f_1_8G.html

The second link (a lens) will give you better quality images, but you can't zoom with it. It'll also be very good for any low light situations you find yourself in. I also highly recommend reading some online tutorials on how to use a DSLR as it'll be a bit different from your point and shoot. http://digital-photography-school.com/got-a-digital-camera-for-christmas-learn-how-to-use-it-here

And before anyone starts a Nikon vs Canon argument, they do the same things just as well, play with some at best buy and buy whichever one you find more intuitive, and buy it online at what will most likely be a discount.

This thread is relevant to my interests...

To the camera guru's, how would a cheaper DSLR (Canon T1i) with a nice lens compare to a $1000+ setup?

Its all about the glass for most stuff. I mean, if you're shooting sports at night with **** lighting, then yeah, you'll be struggling a bit more with an entry level body, but for most things, you can do almost/just as well. The thing I don't like about the T1i is the whole 15mp crop sensor in an entry level (read: cheap) body. Somethings gotta give somewhere. And from what I've read, on the D5000, when compared to the D90, they cut corners in places OTHER than the sensor, and the image quality is supposed to be equal between the two. But that's speculation and conjecture, I recommend going to www.dpreview.com and doing some research. Their reviews are simply the best I've ever found.

Though if you guys are willing to buy used, Canon 40D's are really nice and have pretty good low light/high iso performance.

You want the Mark D something. The one that they filmed that episode of House with. Don't be scared by the 5000 price tag...

Get an old Nikon D200 and some decent lenses. You'll be happy and have enough cash after the body to buy real glass.

I'd go that way too, nikon, pentax.
I was looking D series something... I narrowed it down to any. I could care less about 12mp.
in fact.. when I see a 200 dollar or less that is my interest for beating a camera though maine.

the d5000 "deal" at bhphoto is outrageous and the lens is not even a traditional 2.8
widescreen something?

that place does get some good stuff/price... the backordered does not mean the best, it means people are stupidly stampeding to someone's opinion.

Eh I'm not into buying the latest and greatest when it comes to bodies. I still shoot with my D1X and D1H.
