2009 WRX 2.5L VF52
Mods:
Catless downpipe
Tuning notes:
10.8 AFR to 10.6 taper
Conservative timing
Boost: 17.5 peak to taper of 13.5
Time and time again I get these repeated results on airboy and our local dyno for these new WRX's and they never cease to amaze me. I remember back in 2003 all the money we had to spend to get a 2.0L to do this with a PE1820 .

Very nice. I believe this is my buddy's car that I sent to you. I've got a catted downpipe on mine and it makes very similar power to this. Mine was dynotuned at DSG and the dyno chart looks almost identical, so the Airboy chart is pretty much spot on.
And yes, I remember back in the day in my 02 where I dropped tons of cash and it still wasn't as fast as my 09 is.

Thanks for those NAV cds
Airboy works great when setup correctly. I use a dynapak on a regular basis and the numbers are very similar as well. Its reads a little lower then ESP from our last dyno day (8-10whp less with airboy).
At this level the 2009 is very happy and content, as is the plastic intercooler. If you want to go for 300, aggressive tactics would come into play while do-able in a pass or two I think a few more supporting mods would be needed.

Such an easy transformation on these cars, enjoy!

Bren, would u say the air boy reads closer to a typical dyno jet or dyna pak (hub dyno) just curious of what u thought. U seem to have your calibrated very well :)

I dont mess with the cal. ever since I set it up...
From experience:
Reads 5-7whp less then local dynapack (which seems to read lower then average due to lack of airflow in that place)
Reads 8-10whp lower then ESP, ESP since it's a mustang will read lower in torque which is normal.
These tests were done same day. Dynojet's aren't local so haven't seen one yet but the local dynapack and dynojet RWD/FWD numbers seem to be identical in horsepower and slightly higher in torque by 1%

I haven't paid much attention to the vf52's, but is it the average for boost to taper to 13.5lbs or a stage 2 set up? I realize he only has DP, what could he add to increase that or is that just where it belongs? Even with all that taper the HP is still there at 6k.

Good question.
In my experience yes, on an otherwise stock car, it will settle there even with 90%+ duty cycle in the top end.
Breathing mods and an interrupt style solenoid would help.

Good answer :) Not to take away from this thread but I'm Looking forward to seeing how Tim's car comes out tonight. I'm sure there will be a thread later or tomorrow morning. GL!

TD04's are run of the mill, well see what happens. Tim seems like he's got the setup maximized.

Almost maximized. Missing headers, an EWG, and MBC, but that's later this year :D. But ya, very curious to see the outcome tonight :)

Ya I;m curious to see how it's going to hold boost without the MBC (or the difference with one) but like u said u can always update and add one when you can.

This reads very close to DSG's Dyno Dynamics dyno. I put down 271 hp and 300 ft lbs @ 18 psi. My boost also tapers down to 14 psi. The curves are very similar except bren's tune the torque seems flatter where as mine tapers a bit more.
PS. If I didn't get a good deal @ DSG, bren would have probably tuned my car also.
Bren, if you need the nav discs for other regions let me know.

Must be a huge improvement Jim! 6 less HP than my STi with the same mods (but cat-less). :unamused:

yep, 93 octane.
For now I'm very happy with things, but I could see myself replacing the intercooler, bpv, and fuel pump within a year and see what more we can get. Sadly I realize that the power per dollar value won't be nearly what I got with just the $100 downpipe.
Now the only issue I have is a banging downpipe on my transmission crossmember. I just ordered the XL exhaust hangers from Kartboy, as I've read that those will help prevent the banging. The next step after that would be to grind away some material from the crossmember itself, but I'd rather avoid that.

Great numbers indeed. But after tonight, I don't think I want a VF52 anymore... :D

Yah you will be happy with the added power you get once you can safely turn up the boost a bit more. But that required some more expensive stuff. Some sort of intercooler is key, a fuel pump, and maybe better boost control.
For reference, I was able to pull out over 300 on 91 octane on my VF52 upgrade.

yeah, between the stock intercooler's lack of handling more than 18psi boost and it's efficiency rate, I figure a new one (along with better/stronger bpv) would allow not only more boost, but probably more timing, too, as any aftermarket intercooler should reduce intake temps a bit more than the stock one.
But we'll see. I'm not sure I even need more power :)

Yup... any amount of HP and after awhile u get used to how it feels and u end up wanting more to settle the hunger inside for just a little bit more power. If u don;t get it u better get to the hospital asap where u might be suffering from some kind of sickness and should be ckecked out at once

And to quote myself 3 weeks ago, almost spot on here: :D
Remember his car was on 91, so definitely a negative to power to the 93 tuning we have around here.
A downpipe only tmic car should be good for 275-280whp. I've done a few to 270whp (Airboy and dynapack/mustang dyno) without a tmic. Intakes seem to do very little.
