Well I'm thinking of replacing the Grand Cherokee I've had forever later this year. So far I have two cars in mind.

1) 05+ Volvo S40 T5 AWD 6mt
OR
2) Audi A4 Quattro 2.0T 6mt

I'm leaning towards the volvo cause they're a little cheaper to get into still nice fit n finish and I can mod it a little without the temptation to go nuts. I could do TBE, i/c upgrade, springs, retune and be close to 300awhp which I'd be perfectly happy with.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I'd prefer AWD cars but would consider RWD, absolutely no FWD.

I'm leaning towards some swede speed just making sure there are no other cars out there I'm missing that I should look into.

they are both terrible, real world north..
but if to decide between the two,
go audi and stay easy on that crazy planetary gear within a planetary gear within a planetary gear and pretend it is normal.

at least its longitudinal, the audi may lean and bind the crazy gear after the fiorst 3 days of winter...but the volvo sidetrracks worse than a lightning struck 87 subaru.

..and the 87 subaru is still running.
spend 20k on that one, see what happens.

I like to consider myself lucky because usually I know what he's talking about.. basically, he's saying go with the audi despite their really strange planetary gear setup that they use for their AWD.

personally, I still prefer volvo. my brother had an audi and it literally would blow through water pumps every other month.. volvo's are tanks.. angry, swedish tanks..

Less money for crazy mods :(. After the drive home, trust me 400+ hp RWD cars are fun!

I had a 2004 S40 T5 AWD 6 speed and it was a very fun and comfy daily driver. The only problem was mine spent more time at the local volvo dealership for repair than it did out being driving. Biggest thing was the haladex (sp) awd system and clicking and clunking of the awd. Volvo would fix it and then 4 to 6 week later it would do the same thing. 6 months or so of this got old real quick so away she went....

Any idea what the cause of that was?

The tech kept telling me the 6speed tranmission matted to the AWD and having lowend tq (small turbo and quick spool) and bolts kept coming loose on me. They tried lock tight of the strongest caliber and upgraded stronger bolts and no matter what they would always came loose. Other people have sheared the bolts completly off or cut in half

Volvos have a great fit and finish, but like Audi's, are rediculously expensive to mod.

To make the same power in a WRX it would cost twice as much in an Audi or Volvo.

A stg1 tune alone costs $800 and requires removal of the ECU. (220whp)

I hate to say it, but LGT LTD wagon in 5spd (however rare) is a better choice.

Get a buick centry, and put some sweet racing stripes down the middle. Save the money you would be paying on the car for a year, and then buy something sick nasty with the cash you can put as a down payment. I wish I was patient enough to do this, id be driving a legacy Gt, or sti.

that's part of the appeal to me, I wont be encouraged to modify it. I don't want an LGT, I have a subaru as a toy car so I'd like something different for a daily. I've looked at some modifications for the volvo, I'd only really want to do exhaust, springs, and wheels just to keep it simple.

I test drove one. Wasn't a bad car for the money. I would rather have a 335xi coupe but I'm just throwing out ideas. not sure if you can get it with a m/t though. The one I drove was an auto. my mom wanted to buy one but talked her into a subaru instead lol.

Have you considered a 1st generation Jeep Grand Cherokee? They can be had for short money, and are pretty damn reliable. Most came AWD too! Only downside is the mileage is somewhat dismal.

The only volvo i would get are the s40/s60 R's. With the orange leather, T5 turbo and shiny 5 spoke wheels. One of my favorite cheaper luxury cars out there. Handles great out of the box and is decent in the 0-60.
