SO after watching the exciting video in general banter of the collin mcrae driving thinggy and was wondering how to do a straight pipe that would be street legal straight pipe. Anyways here is what i figured i would try. I have a 3" CAT back on my impreza. Now im looking at this Electronic exhust bypass, seems like this may do the trick, but im not sure it will give me what im looking for...I figured if i got this i can go to terrys shop and see if he help me install it :P

http://www.dmhperformance.com/ecutout.htm

But If i this where would i mount it, right after the header before the cat, or after the cat? Also would i have to get a side exhaust or can i just let it flow right out the valve?

thats a pretty good idea. i guess you could just let it flow out the valve.

quick ?. when my can got ripped off my exhaust i had a temp piece of pipe welded on just so it would clear my bumper and not melt it. But i seriously thought my wrx was slower and much less powerfull without the can. Doesnt the car need some sort of back compression?

idk thats why i posted, the guy that makes them says intsall behind the cat, which will create the backpressure needed, Im not turbo either so the backpressure will be less

not street legal. you'll have to find a place that will pass it in inspection (or just swap it out for inspection but it'd be a pain). Gains are negative but if you are doing it for sound then that won't be an issue. The sound is VERY impressive with the boxer engine... i tried this with my old legacy GT.

Basically, I think it's just worth pointing out that every rally car you see has a small f'ing exhaust pipe for a reason! I'm not sure this is the kind of attention you want to bring to a car so I wouldn't spend the money on it.

That being said, I shouldn't talk... I installed a train horn in the Legacy :P

Screw the cutout. Just make a replacement muffler. A shop with a tube bender can do it cheap. For example. You can bring you stock muffler and say make me a straight pipe out of this. That way they have the flanges already and can use what is on your car now to get it to fit right by copying hanger locations.

Well its an on/off kinda deal, so having it side discharge when racing ie AutoX would be cool, but whne im driving downt he road i can shut it off and it will flow out the muffler. I dont see how this would be illegal? is it just the fact that i have a way of switching it on the go the thing that makes it illegal?

diverters and the like make the car MUCH louder than stock and bypass the emissions systems.thats what makes them illegal, i wanted leg-pipes on my rx7.
as for being illegal just find the right inspection guy

I know they bypass the emissions system, but thats only when its engaged. I would only use it for 'racing purposes'

I know someone that will inspect your car just aslong as your headlights and horn work. Good connection to have.

just do headers and full exhuast from there. my freinds old gc8 car had borla headers and apexi exhuast and it was loud.

if you want to learn about cutouts check out the 2.0 powertrain forum on nasioc there is cutout thead stickied to the top of it. lots of good info about them.

most places will not inspect even if the cut-out is in place... but I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding someone that will pass it.

your car sounds like a helicopter upon warmup. i'm pretty sure it doesn't need to get louder.

I met a kid at ktr that runs a set up like this on his wagon and its a pretty cool set up..... Very loud when he has it dump out right behind his front passenger tire... and nice sound when he sets it back to regular turbo back,....cool idea:devil:
