I was digging up stuff I wanted to do extra before nearly giving up for my GL.. and remembered the silence about GL/loyale and nearly ten years of legacy imprezas first gen could swap all kinds of stuff...
power steering is only one of the gl/loyale parts. maybe they called it a legacy for this reason. let the good stuff move on for awhile from the old.

anyhoo.. I am needing a bigger front sway bar for a 1987 gl dual range, 15 inch aggressive tread. I saw a photo of the legacy non-turbo, would like to decipher a possible swap. Believe it or not the GL with dual range came with a 20mm x 40 inch long bar already, but the LSD makes it useless.
I also took note that the legacy is even smaller than the gl/xt.

If I can verify a legacy will fit, I can seek an aftermarket legacy sway instead of the ridiculous prioced 22mm from addco for an old GL.

they look nearly identical. the measurement I am after, is a non-turbo legacy thickness greater than 20mm..this would make the swap worthwhile...and being sure no greater than 42 inches and no less than 38 in length. The rest is clearly a clean swap, maybe some drilling, simple stuff.

thanks.

EDIT: found a 98-04 baja subaru front sway at 1 inch thick!... also looking identical. the thickness would need a bracket mod.. I cannot however find the length. .the fit looks the part, I just need a length of any non-turbo, post loyale front sway bar.
thanks again.

edit2: seeing the price they are getting to "upgrade" an old impreza to 20mm, I would even swap+ cash my 20mm GL bar for a thick one beyond 22mm. bushings included.

I've got a front Impreza one you can have to try. Worse case it doesn't fit. Best case it fits and you can find an aftermarket one cheap.

ok. I'm in. what do you want for it?

I just checked the spare one I had from a loyale 2wd.. it is 15 mm.

the one on the AWD gl, may also be the same nightmare.

If it was even an 18mm I would have no complaints...

so my gl stuff goes to dumpster, it is useless for any model except lawn tractors in the 10-15 hp range..:unamused:

there is an impreza version that is just a straight bar, not that it matters. And also the 1990 legacy appears to be identical to the gl, 76 bucks brand new... should be in at 17mm or 18 or even more for non-turbo, I am not sure.

here is photo of the loyale one:

here is the calipers on the non-painted section:

upon some further digging... the 20mm from an xt6 still left the 15 inch wheeled loyale plowing with 250 pound springs. (thanks to a nickname "numbchux" for sharing videos),
so thank you for offer, but I wait for 22mm from addco.

by chance can someone measure their spare sway bar, any subaru with a symmetrical one (n/a)

I am looking for 40 inch end to end, and of course subaru.

if you got one thicker than 17 @ 40 inch +/- a couple... pm me.

as it turns out , the addco I was shooting for is 2 bills for a steel damn rod called a sway bar.

no freakin way am I paying that.

edit: they are 43 inches..doable.

so you have a straight 17mm+?
the oem '80s are 15.5mm without paint. :unamused:

I have not found greater than 44.. that is the latest sti stuff that I can guess.

I know there is 40, 42, 43, 44..
I'd attempt any. I weld etc

19mm should be plenty as it is kicked out to at least 43" under a lightweight ea engine, normally goofballed at the oem 40. Although, addco makes a 22 for my kinda reason. wheels are heavier than a subes (peugeot)
just need a photo of the middle.. and even then, I could wing it just try it out...
I would even weld in the newer type links with the goofy balljoints mounted sideways. way to go subaru way to go!

a day like tomorrow with a chance for 60mph gusts and I am headed for the hills first thing in the morning. :unamused:

just throw a price and photo, I can come get or whatever.

bargain.

I did find an outback that broke one oem,(trying to find integrity or worth) but the way it was described with the mount being broken with the sway bar.. well, that must have been unusual hard smack at something.

worth the risk in the small sube, it is only needed for the other side of the physic, and that is the weight of the peugeot wheels and not the car. if that makes sense to anybody...

:dunno:
free is inspiration to smash the hell ot of it if need be. :)

Yeah sounds like an odd situation to cause that damage.

no doubt.

when it is analyzed, most of the heavy work for a sway is the up motion, weight of car off strut.. the rest is struts, weight of car on it, lower arm etc.

I just went for a lengthy ride, towards millinocket, milo, brownville. Roads aren't heavenly.

I really have concluded sway bar, everything else is picked at with a fine tooth comb.

I can even spin the tire that the sway bar side acts like its broken.. need 4wd just for rutted rain road. this is not my only sube that was like that, but 2wd has an excuse.
