View Full Version : Is the new legacy GT a flop?

So, I thought to myself today.......where the hell are all the legacy GT's? I remember the 2010 model we probably got 2 or 3.(gary correct me if i'm wrong) I've seen 2011's are available, but we still have yet to get one. Are they really that rare in new england, or do they suck that bad now? by seeing how little they come in, I would assume they ruined the legacy GT. 05-09 they kinda sold slow compared to the rest of the models, but i'm sure sales annihilated the current one. wtf?!

discuss........

You know what I was thinking the same thing as you the other day. Every time I go to the lot I hardly see any. I thought being so Accord/Camry looking it would sell pretty well offering AWD standard it would sell well in the NE market. Then a optioanl 6 speed manual if wanted over the other 2 cars mentioned.

I have not seen too many Lgt's on the street. How expensive are the new ones vs the 05-09?

Antihero

I think they ruined them. unlike the last gen, they are big bulky and not even close to sporty looking, and you can only get them in stick, which alienated alot of the previous gen's auto driving customer base. Besides, isn't it cheaper to get into a wrx (which even in its own ugly way is better looking than the new legacy/outback)?

Yeah the 2.5GT Limited base msrp of $32K and the msrp for a WRX Limted $29K

I could guess it is the opposite of flop.

subaru has done this for years to northerners/rural even mass and south down east coast...
I even had to learn some models existence via the internet.
My simple dl, and dual range came from elsewhere, both oem errored..owner related, not subaru distribution brought it to this location.

the lighweight ground pounders aren't all of subaru. A mature looking sedan with a boxer is much more a majority.

I could vomit about some of the subaru distribuition stories.. seattle with all the rarites right off the ships. in fact, my own special subaru was simply hauled to the north halfway to alaska from the same batch of 1.2 million made from that area.. if it were not for a transcontinental traveler.. it would be just as rare as ever around here.

they are still the same. demand is gonna leave this place a trickling faucet, always has.

here is an example of something I could put a wager on not even seeing local (I put it in bold writing):

The 2.5GT features a revised 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer four with 265-horsepower and 258 lb-ft (a 22 horse and 17 lb-ft. improved over the old model). A modified turbocharger and a reduction in rpms required for peak torque -- the torque curve is flat from 2,000 rpm to 5,600 rpm, Subaru says -- make it both faster and more efficient than before. A six-speed manual and five-speed automatic remain available.
At the top of the range, the 3.6R model gets an uprated version of the 3.0-liter flat-six previously offered. Subaru says that the 3.6-liter six, which now uses regular fuel, puts out 256-horsepower and 247 lb-ft. of torque (compared to 245/215 from the outgoing engine). It’ll be paired to a five-speed automatic exclusively.

the 6 banger makes just as much power, comes in auto (none of that cvt bullsh**), and runs on unleaded for around the same price. that's probably another issue, is trim levels competing at around the same price points.

Mike

The availability issue is supposedly because they are selling all the 2.5is they can build. Lafayette is running at full capacity with no real room to grow from what I understand. Mine is a premium, which they only did for 2010 (collector's car?) so it stickered for a bit less (just under $30k). As for comparing it to the old Legacy, I really can't since I never owned one but the reason I never looked at them as they were too small interior wise for my tastes. But yeah, pretty much all the 05-09 owners on LGT.com hate the new one. It was pretty much exactly what I was looking for though: an AWD, stick shift sedan with good interior room and a strong engine for $30k or less.

We saw probably 3-5 2010 LGTs and there is not a single 2011 in New England. The new 6 cylinders sell much better (Probably %200) than any 3.0R or LGT of the past.

The new Legacys are better cruisers/family cars. The BL was a better sports car.

I would take the 6cyl Leggy over the 4cyl-T any day. About the same power and no lag.

I agree, but I feel slightly shorter gearing would make it more fun. I felt that the power delivery was almost, dare I say, too smooth, especially down low.

It would only need to push a few pounds of boost.

Similar to a VR6 turbo or supercharger kit. Small amount of boost gives considerable gains.

I wanted to buy a 3.6R and turbo it for the longest time. Then I got lazy with the idea and bought my WRX. I also wanted a 2.5GT, but same thing, I got tired of searching. The new ones are ugly imo. I tried to like them, but I cant bring myself to do it.

I'd have to disagree there. Who says a family sedan needs to be the size of a starship cruiser? Suddenly a family has one kid and needs a freaking Ford Ecursion or a Toyota Sequoia. All legacy's before the 2010 were most certainly manageable in space. Even the back seat albeit a little small for full size adults.

lol touche madame!

They certainly did. But I'm not sure I'd believe the validity of no 2011 GT's in the country.

On a personal note, I'm completely devastated they went from something so beautiful to something completely disgusting for the 2010+ model year. Then again, as I've said before, all new cars are getting ugly and chunky. Think about anything Honda produces now that the S2000 has been axed. All ugly, all the time.

But on a logical note, I'm sure the sales are lacking on the GT trim of the legacy because of the manual only option. But I'm sure it's natural for that trim to die off since people who are looking for an AWD camry, really don't care about a turbo charger, spirited handling characteristics, and all around fun while driving. They're looking for a cheap home on wheels.

Very unfortunate...

I'm happy you can agree to disagree. 90% of lgt.com can't do that.

But really, I had high hopes for the 2010. I was hoping an LGT would be the new car I'd buy when I got out of college. And I wanted to like it. But to me it's a giant blob of clay dropped on the desk with fender flares and a hood scoop.

If i were to describe it, I would call it a quadruple scroll. 4 equal length tubes going straight down into the turbo(centrally lower mounted). probably 6-7 inches in length. This is why the 2.5i/EL/honda sound.

I had an 08 WRX on NASIOC... this is a walk in the park comparatively.

I have a 2.5i 6speed 2010 for my wife, and it is very comfortable, quiet, spacious, and smooth. The old one was a nice looking compact car, the new one is a true mid-sized car.

Subaru doesn't care about the LGT in all honesty, it has always sold at around 5-10% of the total Legacy Line. If Subaru sells 200% more 4 cylinders, they probably couldn't care less about the turbos. Especially with how well their WRX/STi sales currently are. (Up 50% in the month of October).

That is a double kick in the balls I suppose. First the major redesign (which I like anyhow) that I guess got lots of hate from people, then Subaru kicks ya with the whole practically new car thing for 09.
