View Full Version : Shutter in reverse??

Ok, so I have this weird shutter coming from Under the car. Happens at low rpm's going in reverse and I feel like a ricer punk revving up the motor like I'm some ass clown from fast and furious. What do you guys think it could be. I did my clutch about 5k miles ago and it's been happening since then. I tightened everything and had no extra bolts laying around when I was done so I didn't miss any bolts. Give me some ideas folks, and who wants to help me fix it this weekend? Lol

isn't the final test for clutch balance reverse gear?

that is a no BS gear.
:dunno:

an ej clutch guru could chime in here.

shutter is normal with aftermarket clutches.

I'm suprised you don't have it in the forward gear too (1st)

Buy the GroupN tranny mount or other aftermarket tranny mount and it should solve your shutter issue.

Did you replace/resurface the flywheel?

I have a Spec Stage 2+, it chatters in traffic. Nature of the beast.... but it'll tear axles out if I do a 6000 rpm clutch dump. :D

The group N mount reduced it a bit on my car. Adjust your driving style.

It did have a shutter in first gear during break in, but i've adjusted to the slightly stickier clutch. It rattles sometimes when taking off and under shoot the gas a little. I like to have the clutch released under 1500 rpm's. So your thinking an aftermarket tranny mount would solve this? I just think it sounds like crap when backing up, and like I said: I cannot stand revving the crap out of my car to back up. I feel like a fool, trying to impersonate some guy on Fast and Furious.

I did resurface the flywheel. I'm thinking, its an 03 275whp so I should probably invest into some mounts, bushing's, and all that fun stuff. But I suppose i'll try the tranny mount first.

depends on if you're talking about "shutter" or "clatter"

Shutter happens when the clutch plate engages and is stickier than stock causing the transmission to move against the mounts. It usually sounds like something is hitting the underside of the car.

Clatter is the sound of the clutch plate engaging the flywheel. The new clutch plate is stickier, persay, and will engage quicker causing the motor to bog and buck slightly because it is not providing enough power to move the car.

Shutter is cured by getting stiffer tranny mounts and clatter is fixed by adjusting your driving style.

Thanks for the info Bull d o-double G. Its definitly shutter because thats exactly the noise i'm hearing: A clunk under the car. I also feel when I gas it hard in first gear from a stop it feels like the tranny bounces and it makes the car jump and my foot bounces off the gas pedal so this is definitly a necessary upgrade.

I've adjusted my driving style twice in the past 4 months because when I went for a bren tune, he adjusted my sloppy throttle and that itself was a big transition because the gas is right on point now. Then the new clutch was another adjustment I had to make. I've got a WTB thread for a tranny mount now directed at NES vendors. I cant wait to get this problem fixed.

the difference between your stock mount and the GroupN is significant

you'll need two jacks and 2 jack stands

Jack the car, put it on the stands, lightly jack the tranny, remove the 2 bolts, jack a lil more, slide out, replace.

OK, so its a direct replacement. I just remember there being a huge brace under the tranny. The pic makes it look half the size as the one i removed but i'll figure it out.

First thing is get the vehicle with all 4 wheels in the air and make sure its supported by jack stands.

Use your floor jack and slide it in the open space between the cross member and sub-frame, then jack up to relieve some pressure from the cross member.

Use your ratchet and 14mm socket to loosen the 4 bolts on the rear most portion of the X member. 2 bolts per side, then use your deep well 14mm socket to loosen the 2 transmission mount bolts.

Use your 17mm socket and support the X member with your free hand while you remove the 2 17mm bolts holding the front portion of the X member on then remove.

Grab your 14mm socket and ratchet and loosen the 4 bolts holding the transmission mount on the transmission. Then remove!

Use some red locktite on the bolts then mount up your new Group N mount and tighten everything down in the reverse order.

did you do this yet?

Not yet. I've been so busy with the fitness thing to even think about my car. My first order of business before the mount is to get some snow tires, and then i'll be working on getting the mount replaced.

OK, So I installed a new dogbone this weekend to try and finally cure this shutter problem i've been having. Come to find out I really didnt need a new dogbone, nor tranny mount to fix this issue. I actually stripped the nut while putting the dogbone back on during my clutch job and It never really got tight enough. I replaced stock with a new nut and bolt and a v3 something dogbone and now this shutter is gone. Very happy with this, now all I need to do is wait for a friend with a lift to go and install the new tranny mount.

So there it is, lesson learned. Make sure your dogbone is tight because you will be able to move it around with your hand.

Extremely easy. I even got my intercooler on in one shot. COuld be because i've installed it about 20x. Oh well, problem solved. It took me over a month to get it done and it took 5 minutes to order it from Import Image, and about 15 minutes for install. Lol, I almost made a walkthrough for it but the beer told me do drink and not waste time with pictures.
