View Full Version : Intake / MAF Woes - Portsmouth, NH need assistance.

I am having what I consider to be an absolutely ridiculous time with my newly acquired WRX. (2002 130,000 miles).
It is bone stock except for an AEM intake which I am in the process of trying to get rid of.
I bought a stock intake box off of Randall (Bu11dogg2?) but I need the intake hose piece in order to get it fitted.
I didn't realize that, so I was test fitting the box this weekend which involved me taking the upper pipe off. After reassembly the car will not idle/run.
Unplugging the MAF will allow the car to run.
I redid all of the couplers, made sure they were secure.
I took the MAF off and gave it a good blast with MAF Cleaner, but still no luck.
I could really use someone local with a running WRX to swap MAF's with for testing. In addition, a stock intake hose someone has lying around would be rewarded with some $$$.
I live in York, Maine but work in Portsmouth. I probably will not drive the car tomorrow but would love to meet up with someone Tuesday to test MAFs.
Thanks,
-Greg

Is it possible the mad is backwards. I accidentally put an intake on with the pipe that the maf connects to backwards and it would just bog down and stall. I flipped her around and she ran like a champ. Just an idea.

I considered this, and attempted to put it on 180 degrees from it's current position and it does not fit.

I would get a OBD scanner and read the trouble codes and go from there. It will give you a general idea of what the issue is.

*Note that the MAF is currently unplugged.
I apologize, there is no ambient light where I'm parked. And quite frankly it's drizzling out and I don't feel like setting up my lighting.

The MAF has to be turned the other direction, so the pipe needs to be flipped, but you said the pipe doesn't fit when you flip it the other way?

Looks like he needs to literally flip the maf not the tube. It doesn't look like it's flush like it should be

Well yah. I just know on my intake, the mounts on only one way, so if I were to flip the MAF, I would need to flip the whole tube.Looks like he needs to literally flip the maf not the tube. It doesn't look like it's flush like it should be

Give her a try. It just looks backwards. It worked before, it won't just stop working randomly

I think you can even see the paint outline of how the MAF is suppose to go also:

Is that not a MAP sensor? It looks very small to be a MAF.

Subaru MAP sensors are located on the intake manifold of Subarus. See the sensor circled "B" in the pic.

What the OP has is a MAF sensor. Is that not a MAP sensor? It looks very small to be a MAF.

flip it around it is backwards. the pipe could be on wrong or if by you mean it doesnt fit because the wire is to tight then it may be a little tight install if first then plug it in. should solve the issue you have.

I said the maf didn't fit flipped.
But you were correct with your thought. The pipe was indeed flipped, and that was my problem.
I'm still going to ditch this AEM intake though, P0171 is not cool.
Thank you all so much for your time and ideas, this saved me a huge headache.
*the paint outline is weird, but it does not fit flipped on the tube.
Thanks everyone,
-Greg
