If anyone here has NOT seen it, I'd recommend staying that way. Went to see it last night with some friends and it was honestly the biggest waste of $8 in recent memory. If you don't already know, the whole movie is shown through the eyes of someone walking around Manhattan with a camera, so it's always shaking, and looking off into the distance. Very hard to follow this way. On top of that, the movie just ends out of the blue. I was waiting to see what was going to happen, and the lights turned on leaving me thinking, :wtf:?

Its Blair Witch like

I've read and talked about it with friends. Yes it's shot similar to Blair Witch in the fact that the video is supposed to be like it was taken with a handheld camera, but that it's not dizzying like Blair Witch.

Also I heard that this movie is worth seeing. If you want to read the entire plot line, and spoil the ending, it is available if you search Cloverfield on wikipedia.

yes, it is shot w/ the handi-cams to help give you a unique experience. It does not use the handi-cams 100% though, like Nick says I don't think you will be as motion sick as with blair witch.

the reviews I have read have been pretty much positive

looks great on imdb, but have heard from people not to bother. if you want the "cam" experience, go to the torrents. cam copies are already available

It was the ****. I loved it. I can see why some people might hate it. It's not the usual sanitized, cliche Hollywood movie. It's less a monster movie, than a psychological thriller following regular people coping with a monster attack in their city. I thought the characters were believable and interesting.

On top of that, the movie just ends out of the blue. I was waiting to see what was going to happen, and the lights turned on leaving me thinking,

That's kind of the point. Cloverfield is a departure from the movie norm, in that not all of the story is told in-film. There's a crapload of viral marketing that divulges seperate pieces of the overall story. Think about it. When something terrible happens in real life, you don't get all the facts from one source. For example, when 9/11 happened (Cloverfield actually alludes a lot to the Sept 11th attacks, with shots of buildings falling and dust clouds roaring through alleys that look almost exactly like the 9/11 footage), no one had a complete understanding of the events from a single source. Even if you were glued to your TV watching the news channels like I was, I was still unsure of exactly what was going on even days after the attacks.

Cloverfield is attempting to replicate that realism of confusion during a terrible disaster. The more you search the internet for movie-related info, the more you piece together about the overall storyline and origin of the monster. Basically, you get what you put into it. Here's what people have pieced together so far.

(>>>>>>>!SPOILERS!<<<<<<<<) (http://cloverfield.despoiler.org/index.php?title=Game-world_timeline_of_events)

As you can see, the movie occupies only a smart part of the Cloverfield universe. JJ Abrams has already said he plans sequels that greater explain the creature and events. The radio-chatter at the beginning of the credits, when played packwards, says "It's still alive". With his plan to create a long running American monster like Japan's Godzilla, there's even possibilities of more than one creature. There's a theory that there was actually more than one monster in the city during the movie.

So yes, I can see why people where disappointed. If you're looking for a monster movie in which scientists in white lab coats explain every minute aspect of the monster and the attack; and you want a solid, concise ending, it's not really for you. I personally found it refreshing from all the other crap coming out of Hollywood these days. It makes me a little depressed that the only movies I'm looking forward to this year so far (Iron Man, Star Trek, etc...) are just remakes of stories from other forms of media.

I see what you are saying with the whole relating the monster to 9/11. They really never show what it is throughout the whole movie, just parts of it leaving you to piece together what it really is. I didn't know there was already a sequel planned for it, that definitely makes sense as to why there was no well-defined ending. I've got more respect for the film looking at it this way, guess it just isn't my type of movie.

I wouldn't call the cinematography poor, it is using handi cams to give you a more intimate and realistic experience.

Some people can handle it, others cant.

For those who've seen the unique monster movie Cloverfield, you know that the story is supposed to have been shot by the aptly-named character "Hud" with a cheapo handheld consumer camera. You know, something you could grab at Best Buy next weekend, use once and forget about forever. Convincing the audience of that point was one of the movie's most successful angles, since much of the film (yes, a few other cameras were used, too) was really shot on Sony's flagship, absolute top of the line CineAlta HD camera... the rest: http://gizmodo.com/347463/the-real-camera-behind-cloverfield
