ok. just thinking. at the end of next year I plan to purchase an STI (well depends if I work in the carribean next winter or I work in colorado) but none the less I would like to upgrade to that dang thing called a turbo.
Whats a better financially wise way that the general public thinks. build a wrx or just start with some kids 2004 sti off nasioc. I don't care if it is bulky/ ugly/ what ever, I like all the subi's
just looking for personal experience with the way you chose your car.
also i'll be 25 so hopfully they'll see me as cheaper to insure too.

Well Dan you've got plenty of options in front of you. It really all depends on your end goals and your finances.
With out knowing what your end goals and finances are this is what I'd do if I were you:
1. Swap the 2.5RS for a turbo set-up.
2. Go with a used WRX or STi of some sort.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that you're looking at roughly $19k-$22k for a used 2006 WRX in good condition. You're looking at roughly $23k-$27k for used '04-'05 used STi with the lower end of the cost coming with 50k+ for mileage.
Basically in comparison you could get an '04 STi for about $23.5k with roughly 50k miles on it, or a 2006 WRX for about $23k with about 8k miles on it.
Or you could go cheaper and get a used WRX from the '04-'05 years. But then you're dealing with the 2.0 block which isn't terrible, but it'd be nice to start with a 2.5 block if you're going to do some serious modding. But if that's your cup of tea I've found some '04 and '05 as low as $18k-$19k with mileage as high as 50k and as low as 18k.

I say STi.... that should hold you back on the mods for a year.

sti is nice because they do hold their resale pretty well, although you will save money on the purchase, and insurance as well.

yeah. I could swap the RS. but I'm interested in a 4door now. Need some more cargo space for dive gear and what not.
It all depends on what I get for a raise this summer and what I manage to save.
Not crazy about the 2.0. If I go with the turbo, I'd like the STI and then just upgrade the suspension first.
A may turn completly around and go with a wagon.
Sweet. I'm gona go ride my new Ride bindings at Park City, which btw is just outside my front door(coug)nick.:spin:

You have to decide whether you want to pay for power over time (sti) or build something you will feel connected too.
I love my car because it's the bottom of the barrell options wise and I have been able to slowly mod it.
The insurance on an STi will be expensive, even if you are 25.
If it was my choice, I'd buy an 06/07 TR and build it.

Well just for you reference I'll tell you how I came upon buying my WRX about 5 or 6 months ago:
I Had 15k budget, so that ruled out even the most abused STI. I needed practicality so I was looking at 4 door sports sedans; front wheel drive was forbidden and manual trans was a must. I test drove some BMW's and Audi's before settling on the Subaru, they were alright.
Anyway; I settled on the WRX because it fit my budget I knew it had modding potential and it actually drove and rode better than the latter. I walked away from the stealership with a 2004 WRX with 80k (paid 13,500)... it treats me good and my insurance isnt bad at all.
Do I wish a had a STI... **** ya. I would even had liked to have an 06+ with those 4pots and 2.5l. But All I really care about is it met my original requirements of being practical, sporty, not FF, and had a manual trans. After all, everything else can be had for a price.

Just looking around, there are many very nice STi's around for a good chunk less than 23-27k. Case in point:

I didn't bother to do too much more searching, but there are quite a few good deals out there.

Have you driven Jack's wagon? thought he had some big plans for it. Is he making a NH come-back with you or still sticking around Philadelphia?

sti for sure. I went down the road with a modded 04 wrx. I should of bought the sti in the start.
if you do get an sti get a 05+ they have better hubs and bearings and a better selection for wheels.

^^^I heard that about the 04. I also started looking around and did the 04 have the radio as an option?
Vlad(I just had a customer out here with the same name as you:eek: but they weren't related.) He just swapped the front end to wrx fenders and all cause he let one friend drive his car but then that friend let another one drive who crashed it. Not sure if it is fixed yet but hopfully it is by the time I go visit him on my drive back east. Hes staying down there till class is done. Coil overs too. sti cluster. TBE i think.
I would like to build up a car but then I can end up spending more money on the car when I could have already started with the horsepower and all. I can grow attached to any car:lol:
Kevin

the 04 sti didn't come with a radio.
I would start with the sti. The 6speed and brembo's and stronger parts were worth it for me.

ok sudden change of topic here. youre a diver? we need to talk. Im a commercial diver looking to get back into the water.
Sti is nice but it is alot more expensive in the long run. Maintenance, insurance and so forth.

do they dive with scuba gear or surface supply? Think you can get a website?
Kevin

the sti is cheaper in the long run if your after big power. the 6speed is worth the extra money imo. I spent over 5k when I shattered 2nd in my old 04 wrx.
If you just want a quick car with out huge $$$ upgrades go with a 06+ wrx. but go test drive a sti you'll probly buy it.

Yea I wasn't looking at private sales. I was looking at dealer sales since he mentioned financing which typically means going through a dealer.
You could do a personal loan and do a private sale.

I dive for towboat US. not a certified commercial diver. Certified master captain 100 ton though.
^^^If you want to drive boats and dive with us we are always looking for help if not I know of a guy who does commerical work in the area too.
We'll see how realistic of a loan i could get then I can fit a car into that budget.
I'm not shooting for big power but a zippy 6speed. An engine i don't really have to mod for power. I think if i shop long enough I can find a good deal now i know what i'm looking for and what to look for.

I was adding that huge factor to your list of things that have bearing on insurance rates. I believe your driving record has more to do with rates than age or marital status.
I haven't got a ticket in the last 7 years and my insurance is cheap... infact its so cheap I wonder if they somehow entered my car into their system wrong and gave me the NA rate.

i have one speeding ticket from 3 or 4 years ago. thats it. I'll look into it when i'm back. a swapped 2001 obs would be fun too.
I've got some decision making to do. :)
