My cheapo pocket camera is not cutting it anymore.
I'm not looking for anything spectacular.
Maybe one of you shutter bugs can recommend something for me?
-$1000 or less with large memory card
-I know nothing about lenses
-I know nothing about shutter speeds
-I know nothing about DSLR or any of those acronyms.
I'd like something that will be great to learn AND expand on.
I'd rather not upgrade because of lack of features in 6months.
Any input is welcome :)

Stickied for others as well!!!
If you want an SLR, I REALLLLLY like the Canon Rebel (whichever version they're on now, not sure).
I will post up more info once I'm not be harassed by Dan to get a move on so we can go to the store

That doesn't look too bad.
What are you planning on using your camera for? Is it going to be a lot of action shots? Or more like stationary people/things.

Protip: Camera bodies are disposable, it's all about the lens. A 20D (oooold, but good, body) with a 17-40L will look higher quality than a 5d mkii (newer pro body) with the $100 18-55 kit lens. What kind of pictures do you want to take? That will be the biggest deciding factor on lens selection. If you don't want to worry about that crap, or don't feel like spending $800+ per quality lens, look into the high end point and shoots. You can get ones that rival the rebel kits for about $500, leaving you a good chunk of money for quality memory cards ($$$), a bag, and any other goodies (cleaning kit, et). Read www.dpreview.com for some really good camera reviews. I'm not trying to scare you off of a dSLR, just bringing some perspective. Another thing you could do with the extra cash is get a film slr and some manual focus lenses :D

Well IMO, if your going to start getting into the dslr world like me, the Nikon D3100 is a pretty good entry level camera for the price budget. Its like what Geoff said, is all about the lens. Oh, and don't forgot about photoshop
