I am sure that this has been gone over but I couldn't find anything. What do you all do for a job? You all have nice cars and put lots of time and money into them so I figured I would ask and see how you all got that money.
I go to school full time but I work for a builder in the summer and do shipment at Gap at five in the morning right now to get gas money and money to go skiing.
How bout the rest of you all?

I'm on the last 6 months of a 4 year enlistment with the United States Coast Guard. Currently I'm an E-5 and I'll probably hit E-6 when I transfer into the active reserves this fall. Currently I'm applying to Law Enforcement jobs since I earned my Associates in Criminal Justice prior to enlisting and I'm working on finishing up with a Bachelors right now. Hopefully Boston Police hires me!
Bought my car after saving up my combat/sea pay from being overseas for 6 months. Traded my '04 2.5RS in for the '07 WRX. I don't have many mods on it right now because it's a daily commuter car for me. I mostly wanted to stay in the AWD family for the winters up here but wanted the extra power, modding wasn't really an issue. I've done some minor things and once I'm out of the Coast Guard I'll probably start to go further on it.

The Coast Guard has treated me well over the years. To be honest I'd probably stick around if I didn't have to move every 3-4 years. As much as I like seeing the world, I'd like to be able to stay in one area if I can and that just isn't feasable in the Military.
I lucked out and did the ship thing for only a year, the rest of the time I've been on solid ground. Much like the rest of my experience in the Coast Guard, I'm 50/50 with the ship experience. I loved being out there and seeing/experiencing things you'll only ever see/experience at sea. At the same time I disliked it because, well, you're stuck out on a ship 270 feet long with 100 other men and there is no such thing as privacy or any where to go that'll let you be alone.
In the end it's all a love hate relationship. I don't think I met one person who likes every aspect of being out at sea, yet I haven't met one coastie that didn't have at least one good thing to say about their time underway.
In the end how many people can say they've been involved in anti-drug missions in the Carribean, stood guard over 40 haitian migrants on the stern of a coast guard ship, rescued nearly 1,500 people in New Orleans, did the first off-shore boarding of a tanker suspected to have terrorist members on board, visited Costa Rica/Belize City/Gitmo (a.k.a. Guantanamo Bay)/Bahrain and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting, ate rice for a week because your ship ran out of all other food and you were diverted to chase down a go-fast boat carrying 20 tons of concain? And that is just what I can remember off the top of my head.

That is why I wont to do it, so I can travel and see things that many people never will. I did a semester at sea on a tall ship and sailed around much of the world. I enjoy being on boats, I just need to see if that is what I want to do with most of my life or do I want to have a normal life and family?

I'm a sheet metal fabricator/ airframe specialist/ custom painter For the NH air National Guard at Pease ANGB. I am prior service Air Force and used to work on C-130s and HH60s (pavelows) for search and rescue operations. I also worked on T-6 Texans and T-38 trainers that F-16 and F-15 pilots trained on. Now I work on the KC-135 statotanker at Pease. it's a big gas station that flies with 200k lbs of fuel to keep fighters and bombers in the air for extended periods of time to complete missions. These planes were built in the late 50s and early 60s, so keeping them flight worthy is quite the task. i also piant bikes and cars on the side, mostly bike due to the size of my space to work in.

Liberty is a great company. My group has about 10 people who have been hear 10 years or longer. Some have even been here close to 25 years. Finding a company with that kind of longevity is rare these days.
They also take very few risks. If Liberty tanks, I think we'll have more things to worry about then finding new Jobs. There's already so many smaller tech jobs in the area that will go first.

Yea I wasn't speaking badly about them, or think they will tank, just commenting more about the amount of people that work there versus their stability. Of course, in the end they said the same thing about Enron and Adelphia, never know what goes on behind closed doors in corporate america these days lol.

I wouldn't bet on the shipyard closing. Not because of economic reasons like a Liberty shutdown at least. It was almost part of the installation realignment but was taken off the list. Economics would be on the list of reasons, but very far down.
And the powerplant won't be shutting down anytime in our immediate future. That thing provides power to 5 states. If it shutdown we could survive, but the cost over-run to other plants would eventually kick the plant back on. I remember them talking about this when I interned at Rockingham Sheriffs Department because of its security risks.
In a economic standpoint, Liberty would shutdown in this area before a Power Plant or a Military installation.

LOL..........sure no pun intended :D
I work down in Waltham, at a place called Authoria.
This is the coolest job I've ever had, just get to think stuff up all day, try to improve on the old. Never gets boring....I do a ton of prototype'n also, so I get both ends (Pun intended....)
That would be a crazy awesome job, I just do human interaction with software.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz in comparison.

And it's not like any company is immune to mismanagement,
greed and the like.
And not to be vicious, but since you brought it up, at least no one at Liberty has had to put stickers on the money they spend to try and keep their office open..... (I'm looking at you Jerry)

How long you been in the area?
When the base was under the threat of closure back in 04-05 the workers had stickers printed to attach to their money so they could illustrate their importance to the local economy.

Personally I doubt the impact of that campaign, and I think there was more of a legislative impact then anything.
