Study: Maine the most peaceful U.S. state, Louisiana the least

A study by the Institute for Economics and Peace (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/yblog_thelookout/ts_yblog_thelookout/storytext/study-maine-the-most-peaceful-u-s-state-louisiana-the-least/40978548/SIG=112nrihhh/*http://www.visionofhumanity.org/) finds that Maine is the most peaceful state in the country, while Louisiana is the least peaceful. The inaugural United States Peace Index purports to be the first state-by-state ranking of America based on levels of peace. The group's standard for measuring a state's serenity was rather simple: "absence of violence." (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/yblog_thelookout/ts_yblog_thelookout/storytext/study-maine-the-most-peaceful-u-s-state-louisiana-the-least/40978548/SIG=1427vc07f/*http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2011/04/maine-ranked-most-peaceful-state-while-louisiana-comes-in-last/1) Using data compiled from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the group focused on homicide rates, percentage of population that is jailed, availability of small arms, number of police officers and overall violent crime rate.
And despite what you may think, with all the mass public protests going on around the country in the last couple of years, the index claims that America is getting more peaceful as a whole, with neither Republican nor Democratic states having any sort of an advantage over each other.
"The USPI report reveals that peace in the United States has improved since 1995 primarily driven by a substantial decrease in homicide and violent crime," the IEP says on its website (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/yblog_thelookout/ts_yblog_thelookout/storytext/study-maine-the-most-peaceful-u-s-state-louisiana-the-least/40978548/SIG=11t1euc0g/*http://www.visionofhumanity.org/info-center/us-peace-index/), adding that "peace is significantly correlated with factors related to economic opportunity, education and health."
The group lists the ten most peaceful states in order as: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota, North Dakota, Utah, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Iowa, and Washington. And here are the least (also in order, with Louisiana leading the unrest): Louisiana, Tennessee, Nevada, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Maryland.
It's worth noting that Louisiana was ranked as the laziest U.S. state (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/yblog_thelookout/ts_yblog_thelookout/storytext/study-maine-the-most-peaceful-u-s-state-louisiana-the-least/40978548/SIG=12a8tam1h/*http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38382866/ns/business-bloomberg_businessweek/) in a separate study last year. Apparently, kicking back and taking it easy doesn't amount to a life of calm in the eyes of some, though many Louisianians, this reporter among them, would probably argue that they're not lazy or non-peaceful, just misunderstood.

nature keeps its helm, and when it can't.. the ethnically definable robbery at the big apple of 35 dollars is caught on camera.
until you get out in the woods. Watch out in them maine woods. Right to bear arms has come in handy more than once...

And the best part; live in eliot, kittery, york, wells, etc. Pay decently low property tax, do all shopping in Portsmouth with no sales tax

there is more around than what thinks they are going to get away. the right to bear arms may have been used here as much as texas.

being here for most of the past 24 years has some nice rides...

car/truck needs to be a brut if to really go about it.

(I kill everything). the coastal tourist route can pretend oem is spectacular most of the time.

bar harbor this year.. check that one out. The big cat ferry boat is not in the harbor any more.

A mainely subaru forum has one of those rides planned for that. One bad apple, I ain't going. Don't need a gangsta clan sized stampede of subarus anyway.

Pffft lame.

Remove income tax and sales tax and I would love Maine more than NH. Basically the whole reason I moved out of Maine.

Nate8409

but your property tax is sky high amiright?

Just depends on where you are. Mine are a little high but combined with income tax and taxes if I was living in Maine it is cheaper to live here. ESPECIALLY when you factor in 5% sales tax everywhere.

That is if you abide by the law in Maine for actually paying sales tax on the goods you buy and don't slip over to NH to make your purchases.

Berge56
08-03-2011, 10:26 AM
