View Full Version : GClark's 1993 Legacy Touring Wagon

It's about time I made one of these.
My N/A lifted OBS has always left me wanting more power, so I started to collect parts for supercharger build, to give the OBS some more power. My smarts caught up with me so I ended up leaving the OBS N/A for DD duties and looked for suitable project car.
First I picked up a 89 Saab 900t, long story short, it was a POS. I then looked for a Subaru project car, and spotted a 1993 Legacy Touring Wagon on legacy central for sale in VT. The owner ended up driving to Maine for 4th of July and brought the car with him. I purchased it for $1000 delivered with a slew of problems.
3 Brakes were stuck rusted together
Turbo wastegate was stuck open
Running on 3 cylinders
Automatic Seatbelts didn't work
dents everywhere, etc etc etc, but relatively no rust!
Here's what it looked like:
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/skiermandude/Legacy002.jpg
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/skiermandude/Legacy001.jpg
Pretty poopy.
Then I started to fix and improve it:
New injectors
3in Turboback exhaust
Meyagi Axelback
07 TMIC
Tein HA Coilovers
Turboxs BOV
Spoiler
Manual Swap
TD04
Ralliart Seats
Walbro 255 Pump
Coffee Cup Mod
This how she sits now:

All those mods made for a really fun car, but it left me wanting more. Especially after riding in Mikes monster.
So I got these:
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/skiermandude/031211161250.jpg
17X9 Rota Dpts
Which will be mounted this weekend with 255/40/17 Hankook Ventus Evo tires!
Also coming in this weekend are Evo Brembo Brakes, to help stop my new wide wheels. Those will also be hopefully installed this weekend. For rear brakes I'll be running WRX 2 pots as soon as I can find some for a good deal.
(Thats 4 parts from Mitsubishi on my car for anyone counting)
In the near future, I'll be getting Mikes old setup(vf23), which will put me somewhere around 300whp since he'll be building a 400whp setup.
Also coming soon:
new paint
fmic
and bodywork(already have the body parts, just have to install)
That's it! I'll keep this thread updated as more stuff comes in and get installed!

Hrmm, I think thats it.
I have a Turbo SS bumper, 2.5 heads, and body panels sitting in my barn. Hawk pads and DRT slotted rotors on the way for the Brembos. A 6 speed is in the future too, as soon as the 5 speed starts to go(which is going to be soon). I'm pretty pumped to get Mikes setup, it'll be all the power I'll ever need.
I'm thinking black or red for a new paint job. Any other ideas?

Thanks guys!
New wheels mounted today. The fenders had to be super rolled and pulled. The fronts are now flared, but it came out realll good.

I have a turbo bumper that will be going on tomorrow and then a front lip as soon as I find one. The gap between the bumper and the ground is killing me. Dents were already on the car before the rolling :/. New fenders will be installed some day.

I envy you... One of my favorite Subarus every built is a early legacy turbo wagon. Thing looks nasty with those wheels too.
Also how hard was the manual swap? I have been seriously considering it with mine, now that it's getting nice again, and I have other cars to drive so I have time to work on mine winter ride again!

Yeah the hood is a turbo hood, but I've got an N/A hood that will go on when I install the front mount.
Thanks for compliments guys! I did not do the manual swap, Mike did, but it seemed like it was pretty straight forward. Maybe he'll chime in. It's my favorite mod on the car so far, automatics suck all the fun out of driving.
Mike did an excellent job with the fender rolling. He had to flare the fronts about a 1 1/2in to make the wheels fit! We knocked some rust lose while rolling the fenders, so I'm taking care of that today with some paint that kinda matches.
If anyone is looking for some new tires, check out the Hankook Ventus Evo. These things are way sticky! And they were relatively cheap, $490 shipped after a mail in rebate. I Highly recommend these.

hey how was that hood to put together?
GClark
05-08-2011, 10:54 PM
Very easy. I took out the old hood scoop, ground down the mounts on the wrx scoop, apply 3m sticky tape and heat, and bam! New hood scoop. It won't be going anywhere, that tape is very sticky.

Thank you! Well they kind of did, that bumper was supposed to be on the car, but from replacing the front end, I could tell it's been in an accident or twelve. They put the wrong bumper on when they fixed, cheap basterds.

:lolno:
That makes four Mitsubishi parts on my car...
From my nasioc thread:
So why Evo brembos?
1. Cheaper
2. Their the same thing as Subaru brembos.
3. I like red
4. YouTube - A Dramatic Reading of a YouTube comment. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAnpIevA1xY)
Couple notes:
Sti pads work with Evo brembos
Get the hardware kit from napa for the sti, Ill post the part number later. It was 25 shipped and everything fit fine except for the pins. More on that later.
It was fairly easy, took a few hours, could have been faster if I didn't have to run to the store.
Use Spec B rotors, should be about 12.5in. STI ones are a little to big.
Step 1:
Jack car up, jack stands, remove wheels, etc.. Use two jacks because your car is too low
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n614/gclark6464/050911150228.jpg
Step 2:
Remove stock calipers, rotors, and unbolt brake line. If you need a refresher
http://www.northursalia.com/modifications/brakes/vbrakes/vbrakes.html
Step 3:
Grind down the flange of the caliper(angle grinder), just alittle bit, .1in, enough to make it flat.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n614/gclark6464/050911110846.jpg
Step 4:
???
Step 5:
Drill out the spindle. I used a big drill called the Hole Hawg, but any drill should work fine. The reasons for this is because the holes on the Evo brembos are further apart then Subaru ones.
Drill this one and the bottom one, just enough so you can slide the bolts in.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n614/gclark6464/050911223434.jpg
Step 6:
Grind down the spindle, .1-.2 of material, this allows the caliper to centered on the rotor. I took off to much so I had to use washers.
http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t101318-evo-brembo-install-yes-suby.html#post1615534
Step 7:
Install the rotor and calipers, slide the pads in, push the pins in, put the Jesus clip in, and put the caliper on. Screw on the bolts, which should be a 19mm bolt. Reatch the brake line, which fits the caliper perfectly. Bleed brakes, and go break em in.
Pads difference:
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n614/gclark6464/050911230412.jpg
Evo bolts are bigger then Subarus, here's the new size:
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n614/gclark6464/050911223614.jpg
Napa brembo hardware number:
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n614/gclark6464/050911223715.jpg
Yay!
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n614/gclark6464/050911171834.jpg
I'll get some better pictures of them tomorrow, and I'll let you know how awesome they are.
CN's: Evo brembos fit on subarus with alittle bit of cutting and drilling. Brings in mad ladies.
Is this when I say haters gonna do stuff? ;)
Let me know if ya get any questions. It was a pain, but totally worth it.

New shell from VT, not as rust free as I was promised, but way better then my red one. There's one big hole that needs to be patched, and then a sideskirt installed. Then it'll look mint.

I have a red shell if you're looking for a project. ;)

It's a better starting point then the last one, that's for sure.

Are you swapping anything over from the red wagon?
GClark

The plan was to swap everything over from the red wagon, but now I'm upgrading. The engine and exhaust is getting swapped over, but with 2.5 heads, fmic, 550cc injectors, vf23, etc... The wagon's getting another manual swap, but with a better 5 speed, the 94 N/A tranny is not happy. Maybe a LGT or 4.44 set up. The 17X9 Rota DPT's are getting sold for some 17x8.5 (less wheel, more low). The Tein coilovers are getting sold for stiffer ones too.
Basically, I'm learning from my mistakes on the red wagon, and improving on this new one.

 I thought about this, but no thanks, I'd think about swapping mine first as it's super solid. But then it becomes a project instead of my DD, and I have too many projects already :unamused:

It sucks to learn the hard way, but you will have a killer car when it is all done. :) That list sounds great and should be a blast to drive.
