So this is my pretty brief journal of my RS. There's lots of things I want to do to it, but I would like to upgrade to a 2002+ sedan in the future. I imagine cramming kids/carseats into a coupe will be... frustrating. :e
From the stats that I have found, only 1695 RS's were sold in the USA in 1998, only 500 of those were Acadia Green, and 100ish were automatic. So a 1998 Automatic 2.5RS, Acadia Green w/ Goldies is pretty "unicorn" lol.
She has some rust, she has some dents, and needs some TLC without question, but it's worlds better than my EG. I love her anyways. <3
We picked it up from a Junkyard out by Boston. The oil pain was crushed, so we couldn't start it. Bought it on a hope and a prayer. It only had 113k on it so it was worth the risk to me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/bluekizzo/IMAG0094.jpg
Gave it a quick rinse as soon as it got unloaded off the truck. The yard it was sitting at was next to train tracks, so it was under about 3 inches of dirt, it was all in the vents.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/bluekizzo/IMAG0099.jpg
It kind of just sat there... unable to move under it's own power for a couple... months lol. It has a leak so the carpet was always wet after it rained, the battery was fried because the alarm was ghetto, and the oil pan/feed lines were trash.

The wing was stolen sometime between us calling to have it "reserved" and it being picked up. They broke both tail lights, ripped the bolts out of the wing, dented the trunk, and dented the metal brackets below the lights. Almost as if they grabbed the wing, put their feet on both tail lights and just started yanking lol.
Someone snagged the weather stripping from the driver side also.

Kenney put the new oil pan in, fixed the alarm, put a new battery in it, threw on some new tires and rewelded the exhaust as it was cracked.
It spent the majority of the winter like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/bluekizzo/IMAG0313-1.jpg
We met up with Johnsea and snagged his old WRX seats for cheap and tossed those in. The rears were a bit of a pain to fit straight, but we got it pretty good. Needs some more adjusting but I'm not really worried about it. Sold the RS seats for $200 to a friend with an L sedan.

Sometime later the starter started crapping the bed. Eventually leaving me stranded at the Hadley Mall in the rain. :unamused:
I called Kenney, he came and got it started, and 10 miles down the road the Alt belt snapped. I changed that the following weekend.
Here's a recent picture with the refreshed RS wheels (only have the passenger side done so far.) and the RS trunk/Wing. Unfortunately it's blue - and I haven't had the time or spare change to paint it/the car.

Heres how the wheels looked up until recently. The PO really didn't take good care of her. =[

Currently has a 2005 WRX heated drivers seat, but no pictures of that.
Here is a quick photoshop of the direction I want to go. Disregard the XXR wheels, just keep the "gold" wheels in mind.

I want some big ol' fogs installed in my bumper on both sides of my license plate.
Here is a list of stuff that I want taken care of:
New/rebuilt transmission (AWD not working)
New sunroof motor (doesn't work)
Fix rust on window pillar
Fix rust on QTR panel
New Rally type fog lights
New paint
Clear corner lights
New tail lights (cracked) red/white or red/red
We have a set of 17" enkei wheels sitting around that I want to put on but they need new tires. Oh, and they were on Kenney's old Prelude, so idk if they will fit. They are universal but..

We got them for $70.00 @ Autoboner. Made the brackets myself and wired them into her OEM fogs. They did come with all the wiring/switches/relays needed if you wired them up seperately though.
Going for a bit of a "Rally" look, but I thought a pushbar was a little bit unnecessary so we DIY'd it. She loves 'em.

Then the cutting starts....

oh - does anyone want/need a L front bumper? as the pics show it's cut for big fogs. We will also be selling the bumper support with brackets and fogs spliced with OEM subaru fog plugs. Preferably all together.

trans, shifter and linkages, pedal set (its a cable clutch, so cable is on the pedal) driveshaft, rear diff. it would need a starter (have one, but its pending to ed) and a clutch/flywheel.
I have no idea what condition the transmission itself is in, though. thats why I havent done anything with it. it came out of a 96L that I was told ran and drove great. I know the engine was still going strong in my friends car until he swapped it recently. the trans Ive never hooked the linkage up to see how it feels :iam: I got the whole thing cheap, but because of the unknown condition I havent really thought about selling.

:iam:
this swap is one of the easiest to do because its a cable clutch. no need to worry about finding the right master/slave cylinders. all you would have to do is rewire the neutral sensor and the reverse lights. (good walkthroughs on rs25 for it)

The 8 bolt bell housing or 4 bolt bell housing does not matter. They will still bolt up no problem. Look at Meyagi's Legacy with the EJ22T, and newer 6 speed.
Berge56

Yea I thought he had an 01.... so an older transmission wouldn't work in that case.

Picking up a new transmission and torque converter this weekend with 118k on it.
Berge56
10-27-2011, 08:55 AM
Make sure you read up on how to seat the torque converter. You need to remove it from the flex plate and seat or install it on the transmission then bolt it up. Failure to do this will result in a bad transmission as the transmission pump will get taken out.
Shiux

bratman18
10-27-2011, 04:36 PM
Yeah if the torque converter comes out, it can be a ***** to get back in. But I have also had them pop right back into place. Best thing to do is leave it in the transmission when removing the motor from the tranny..............when possible.
Shiux
10-27-2011, 07:12 PM
Turns out he sold the TC with the motor... so for 250 I get just the transmission. No matter what I need it, but I think my oem TC is bad... it shifts hard from 1st to 2nd. Any insight on whether that's the trans or TC?
Also, the RS TC should mate up to the Forester trans, right?
bratman18
10-27-2011, 07:27 PM
I doubt it's the TC causing the hard shift. That's all controlled by the trans. And That's very odd for the TC to be sold with the motor. They may have forgotten to remove the TC bolts and pulled it when they did the motor.
Shiux
10-28-2011, 08:05 AM

TC's can be used in other transmissions. There are plenty of people that change one out for a another to have a "higher stall" TC.

Shiux
10-29-2011, 04:21 PM
So I'm putting a 8 bolt transmission in my 4 bolt impreza. No big deal there - if I'm not mistaken I am also going to need to get matching (99+) RS axles for the newer 8 bolt tranny... right?

Got the drive shaft, exhaust, transmission out before we lost light. Quite the sight to see people working a transmission swap in 8+ inches of snow lol
Found out both front axles are ripped, so replacing them was needed regardless of tranny I picked. Also the exhaust kinda deteriorated while removing it, so that's on order. UEL header just because I might as well while its off. I also found out the front left caliper OS sticking slightly, so new rotors, pads and a caliper up front is on the list.

the clutch is hydro
1982gl4
11-15-2011, 12:58 AM
Should be hydro, and there should be a place on your firewall for the master cylinder, I think there is even in my first gen legacy that came as an auto... Cable wouldn't be hard to do either. I've swapped both before :hide:
so what happened to the trans?? I tried to find it in the thread but couldn't find it. FYI when you do an auto trans make SURE you remove the flex plate bolts BEFORE you separate the the motor from the trans...I made that mistake on my SS and ruined a perfectly good trans pump.

Which bolts ate you talking about?
The torque converter bolts/flex plate bolts. The ones that hold the flex plate that is bolted to the back of the motor, to the torque converter that goes into the tranny. There is 4 of the and if you don't remove them, it's a pain in the ass.
^this and you break the pump on your trans, and then you have to either open the trans or pay a trans shop to fix it....expensive lol. There is a small access window on the bottom right where the motor meets the trans, you have to have someone rotate the crank pulley to move to the next bolt...MAKE SURE YOU DO THAT FIRST!!
someone told me to get the starter on there and bumpy it with the key to get the torque converter on the last notch and "locked in" just make sure you have a FSM handy

When we removed the original transmission, I took the TC out after the trans was off. How could that damage the pump?
bratman18
12-02-2011, 12:15 PM
That won't damage it, it's putting it back in that could damage it. They sometimes don't like to click back into place. But you really have no need to remove it anyway
Shiux
12-02-2011, 12:24 PM
