Hey Guys,
I guess I can start a build thread now! ;)
Since I smoked the bearings in the stock motor, I found another one out of an 09 WRX with 6K miles on it. Plan is to swap it in and maybe do a couple upgrades along the way...
We started to yank the motor the other night. Spent a couple free hours disconnecting and removing stuff from the motor. Man there's lots of vacuum lines and electrical connectors in there!
Also saw the subaru hacks at Clay Subaru in Norwood, Ma didn't bother to tighten the clamps on the turbo inlet or oil return hose. They put a nasty kink in the wastegate controller vacuum line, and didn't bother to tighten the nuts and bolts from the tranny to engine when they did the clutch. http://legacygt.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gifhttp://legacygt.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif Great techs there, I highly recommend that place. http://legacygt.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Hope to have the motor out Sunday or Monday night and start swapping the manifolds and stuff over to the new one.
Gonna paint the new one "Chevy Orange" for reliability concerns, too. lol http://legacygt.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Here's a few pics for proof.

Maybe get the engine out on Monday night... Sunday if I can find and fix the water-in-the-basement issue I'm having at the house right now... Grrr...
Will post more as I progress...

Nice garage dude!
Ha! I wish it was mine! It's a friend of mine's shop. He's nice enough to let me break lots of stuff there though. ;)
What's under the tarp?
89 Turbo T/A. 40K miles. Mint. Absolutely gorgeous car! Slightly modded, but mostly stock. Runs low 12's now. Soon to be more modded. And raced. Beaten every summer. Wish it was mine. ;) Belongs to my buddy that owns that TTA (and 87 GN 30K miles, and 87 T-Type race car, and...) *sigh*

Nice! Where did you get the WRX motor? I'm looking for an EJ255 or EJ257 SB now as well.

It's out. Spent another hour or so on it, and it plucked out nice and easy. Engine compartment looks to be in much better shape than I was expecting! No rust! Woot.
Need to collect a few more parts for it now... Clutch, Flywheel, some hoses, egr block-offs, oil and coolant and all that crap.
I think tomorrow we will swap everything over to the new motor and if I can get all the parts, maybe start throwing it back in.
We'll see.

Very nice, looks like you will have it back up in no time! What is doing with the blown block?

Man, what a complete and total fustercluck this build has been! Everything that "fits" doesn't, and parts I hoped to be good, weren't, and needed replacing... Ugh. Lotsa cashola tied up in this!
BUT... I think that tonight it may be running! All that's left to do is run a few vacuum/pcv lines and install the intercooler and a few odds and ends and we are good!
Quick side note... Can't find the vacuum line that goes from the turbo inlet to the evap system. We have the boost control one and pck one all set, but can't find it and really don't want to pull the intake off again to find it... Anyone got a pic or a hint? Maybe someone with a perrin inlet installed?

Coming soon to a blown up scoobie near you!
Mods:
BNR evo iii 16g
DW850 injectors
Walbro fuel pump
Perrin catted DP
Sti UP
3" catback with resonator
K&N cai
Perrin inlet and aftamaf
Perrin tmic
Grimmspeed EBCS
Forge recirc valve
One step colder ngk plugs
PCV catch can setup
Excedy Stage 2(?) clutch
Brand new subaru shortblock and cleaned and resurfaced heads and valve job. Stock cams and heads.
Engine swap part 2 to commence shortly. Hate to say it, but I'm even a little excited. ;)
Think I would benefit from a set of headers?
EDIT: For those who don't know the story, here's the short version:
First motor spun bearing.
Got used 6K mile 09 WRX motor.
Swapped it.
Replaced lots of parts doing so.
"New" motor was junk. WAY worse then the one I pulled out.
Parked car since mid-June and now have a new shortblock from Subaru and am trying again. ;)

Do a stage 1 clutch or stock to protect your transmission.
toomanytoyz
08-28-2011, 06:26 PM
Not sure what stage the clutch is. It's not stock. I have a brand new stocker and was informed it would slip up top. So I went with the Exedy Stage (something) that was recommended to me. I'm sure it'll be fine. It's not a puck clutch, so drivability should be nice, too.
I'm not going to worry about the transmission. First I've heard it's a week point. It's not like I'm going to be doing 4K rpm clutch drops. It's just a daily that will likely be autocrossed occasionally if it ever runs again... ;)

Lol.
It runs, but not well. Yet. Still not programmed for the injectors, so it didn't want to stay running, and was running pig rich when it did. But i managed to get it home 4 miles from the shop... Hope to get a break in tune on it so i can go seat the rings this afternoon, and then change the oil, again. Changed it after it came up to temp the first time. Plan is to get a couple hundred miles on it, change the oil again, and get it to Bren. I still have to install the fuel pump, perrin intercooler (was missing o-ring for turbo flange), catch can for pcv, ebcs, and gauges.
So, not done yet, but getting there...

So Eric came by last night and loaded my break-in flash for me. Runs MUCH better now. :D And so much for "no boost anywhere" in this flash. It starts building boost at like 2200 rpms! No matter how light I am on the throttle. This thing JUST. WANTS. TO. GO!!!!! It's going to be a very hard week trying to stay off the boost!!!!
Just did the 25 mile oil change tonight. Taking it to work tomorrow. So far, so good. Hope all continues to go well!
Gotta do the gauges after work tomorrow, and the intercooler if the mailman brings the o-rings for it. Hope to do the walbro one night this week too, and I should be ready for my dyno tune on Saturday! :D

Oh boy! Getting even CLOSER!!!! Got my big Perrin TMIC and Forge recirculating valve installed today. I had to re-route a pcv and vacuum line, but managed to make the room. It was a struggle, but I got that monster on there! I also swapped out a bunch of hardware with stainless stuff...

http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/2011-10-05145129.jpg
And I guess this is why they call it the Perrin Stealth...
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/toomanytoyz2/2011-10-05160317.jpg
I managed to get the stock cover to fit!!! Took a bit of trimming and drilling, but it's on there! Woot!
I had to add a coil spring twist-in spacer to the driver's rear coil. For some reason, it sits about 1/2"-3/4" lower there than the other 3 wheels, and that tire is really getting chewed! I think the spring is worn out or even broken. I need to see about getting some firmer, STOCK HEIGHT springs. Maybe some stiffer struts, too...
Gotta charge the AC (tonight) and install Walbro fuel pump and roll and flare the fenders (tomorrow) and she's ready to tune on Saturday!!!!
I can hear the turbo spool and the Forge valve chug through the CAI. Sounds awesome! :D

I will over the winter to be ready for spring... But the tire shredding problem I'm having is due to undampened suspension travel and the rear end squatting way too easy... :(

whiteline makes it... helps reduce the amount of forward to back movement which may help with squatting issues during acceleration.
