It is supposed to be an amazing engine. Look at some of the 24hr race cars. They are using diesel engines. Something must be right about them.

Last I heard, it was to be offered with the Legacy platform only(at least to start), and was slated for US shores to be coupled with *automatic* transmissions, while the rest of the world gets a 5 or 6 speed option.

I get more disgusted with the brand as time goes on.

Agreeeeed. What are we chopped liver? Who wants any automatic? Regular clutch driver automatic at that... now maybe if Subaru brought back the CVT or made a Dual Clucth transmission I would be happy. How sick would that be?

I've been *****ing for years about how Subaru needs to get with the times and offer smaller cars with better gas mileage(so I can buy one again) to properly compete with other imports and that they'd do well with a turbo diesel in the US. Yet the cars just get bigger and more bloated with every remodel, and now that there's a diesel mill in the works, it's only transmission option is the bane of my existance? **** that, it'll be the SVX all over again. I know Americans are mainly fat ****ing drooling retards, but a few of us have taste.

Eat me, Subaru US. I guess I'll have to buy a bugeye WRX wagon and rock it until I'm 80.

Agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed again hahahaha. Fat ****ing drooling retards, exactly! It's a question that goes unanswered by many car manufacturers. Why do car, trucks, suvs etc just keep getting bigger?

Methinks the massive weight gain seen in the cars of the last decade is due to not only *fatter* American asses, but due to higher crash standards. It's more difficult and expensive to package 27.33 airbags AND big Yankee backsides into a car, so make the car larger to utilize new gear without all the hassle and cost of new tech and engineering.

As such, my "small" Honda is roughly the size of a late '80s Taurus. Gay.

Really no way? Your honda is the size of a Large sedan from the 80's? Damn!

That really is a good comparison of how cars are getting bigger. I usually go by weight of the vehicles. The Nissan Sentra gained like 600 pounds in 10 years. For what reason? My Sentra right now has a 4 star crash rating at todays standards.

Jeremy Clarkson 'NOT PLEASED' With New Outback Boxer Diesel
The Sunday Times (UK) March 30, 2008

Review:
Subaru Legacy Outback TD RE
The aristo ruined by the devil’s brew

Excerpt:

"And . . . I’m repeating myself. You probably already know that I am a huge fan of the Legacy. And what you want to know is: the new engine. Any good?

No. It’s crap. Normally, diesels are happiest at low revs in a high gear. Not the Legacy. It has the torque of a pencil sharpener, the life and soul of a corpse. You need to be in first until the whole engine has revved itself clean off its mountings, and even then when you go for second it judders and shivers in protest.

I don’t care if it uses only a gallon of fuel every 6m miles; it is just not worth the bother.

The Legacy with a petrol engine? Yes. Definitely. It has bingo wings, a great suit, the right moustache and a silly hat in the shape of a mad sunroof. If it could talk, you know it would sound like Edward Fox. It’s a brilliant all-rounder. But the diesel? Not in a million years."

That's about the size of it, no pun intended. My '91 Civic 4wd wagon(EF 5 door, not the hatch) weighed about 2400lbs. with fuel. My '03 EM2 Coupe(granted it has a sunroof and 4 airbags) weighs a touch under 2600lbs., despite the difference of two drive wheels and all the ancilliaries that go with it, no cargo room, alloys not steelies, 3 fewer doors, and one fewer gear. And it has none of the soul of the wagon. Dumb.

Sad to hear that Clarkson hated the diesel. Maybe Subie will get it right in a few years.

If they come out next year, and they have what they say they do, i just might have to get one. 50+ miles per gallon! Thats more than double what the regular boxer turbos are getting.

what do you get for mileage??? the jetta deisel could get upper 50s on the interstate. dont just shun something because the gas is 60 cents more...do some math man. if the mileage is good enough, it will counter the gas price... i would be interested. its not all about speed. its about your life style...commuting is in the eye of the mpg...
