OK, long story short, I'm thinking about upgrading to an STi, but I've heard horror stories from others about the cost of replacing brakes on them. Is it true that I could be looking at a couple/three thousand when it's time? And if so, why? Do they require more than just a standard pad swap?

Yeah, I'm looking at 2011s. I've just been told in the past that it has cost people $2-3k when it came time to replace brakes, and was wondering why. I didn't know if the rotors tend to need replacing at the same time as the pads, or if the calipers needed a rebuild too, etc. Just seemed really high to me to be just new pads/rotors.

do those people making those claims own sti's?

also, not even close, unless you were doing $1000 rotors and SS lines etc.. a few hundred in parts and an afternoon in the driveway. hell, sti brembo's are easier to replace pads on than most cars Ive ever done brakes on.

Yea I just picked a basic "Crap I have to replace everything" kit. Under $450 for all 4 rotors and pads is nothing.

you can get lifetime rotors from napa for 80 bucks or so.
and a nice set of hawk pads for around 200
there really easy to work on.
only thing that could suck is if you don't helicoil the cailper mounts right away they can give you trouble down the road.

OK, thanks. No, most of them were Subaru owners but not STi owners. I thought it seemed a little steep, but like I said, I wasn't sure if they had some special requirement where more than just the pads and maybe rotors needed replacement often.

That's the cost for doing 4 wheel pads and rotors at a dealer with OEM (Brembo) parts. If you do it yourself you will save the labor (approx $400) and if you buy cheaper parts, you will save on parts. My former teacher was a Subaru master tech and he claimed $2500

People who don't price shop are just fools, I did my fronts for under $350 and that was for Centric cross drilled/slotted rotors and pads (stoptech).

Pretty sure you can only do brembo fronts on the 2010. As far as I know the rears wont fit.
