I was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on an issue I have noticed. While driving, with my AC turned on I notice that I get a Whine from the engine at about 2500-3000 RPM and it only gets louder the Higher the RPMs go. Yesterday I was cruisin with the AC on and noticed the noise, I got up to around 3200rpm and Shut down the AC and the noise instantly went away. Even just shutting of the AC and not the Fan itself. Might this be an issue with the Compressor or some other part of the AC system? :unamused:

Is the A/C still blowing cold air? Compressors normally make some noise but if it's silly loud it could be on it's way south. Your evaluation of the system should include reading the pressures.
Sounds like the compressor to me. When you turn it off the clutch in the pulley disengages and your whine goes away. Plus, it's not uncommon for bearings to go bad in the compressor, many times they can cause a coolant leak too and make for some hot days.

How would I check the Pressures? And it is definately a noticeably loud noise, more so than normal operation. Drove by a few guys at Home Depot in Wallingford, CT and heard one of them say something like "That doesnt sound right".. Which I was thinkin at the same time.. And yes, it does still blow cold air, Yesterday It was actually blowing pretty cold.

Bring it in to a shop and have them check the system over.

So today I was on my way to work, had the AC goin, was blowing nice and cold... Then it was warm, and I was hot... Flippin AC Quit on me.. I shut off the AC and get a metal on metal sound for a second or 2. I get to a friends place and pop the hood and I look at the Pulley on the Compressor.. The triangular piece on the front appears to have come loose, and the bracket pieces that hold it steady appear to be broken. The circular piece just behind it is loose and free spinning which it obviously is not supposed to. I called Quality Subaru in Wallingford, CT and based on my description they said bout $250 to fix, gonna bring to them tomorrow for a decent quote, and see what is needed to fix it and see if possible to do it myself... Deff not happy tho considering the next 2 days are forcast to be the hottest of the year thus far...

Ok, Brought the car to Quality Subaru today and was informed that the AC Clutch is whats broken. Goin to cost me about $280 just for the part, plus labor charges and possible need to recharge the system, there saying just over $500 for the work.
