My friend (whom I rebuilt his EJ255 about 20K ago) had his car die out, kept stalling, pouring fuel pig rich. He spent 2000.00 on coils, plugs, injectors at a MA dealer and it's still running like poop. They told him he had an internal engine problem. He towed the car to my house last night. I was able to diag this in 15 minutes.
He needs a new top mount, it leaks with only 2-3psi of pressure. While driving and looking a A/F correction and looking at a learning view I knew it was leaking before I even opened the hood
Moral of the story; Don't let the basic's bite you in the ass. :D

I guess the car was running so badly he had to do something ASAP, he lives 90+ miles from me.
Happens all the time, my guys in the shop go after the most complicated and expensive probability without CHECKING DAMN FUSES!!!!!!! Drives me nuts!
My tech: Needs an airbag control unit, code for no ign run input.
Me: Did you check EVERY fuse?
My Tech: Yup!
The next day:
Hey Boss, I have the same code. I trundle out there, (aggrivated), and find a blown fuse in the PDC under the hood.

It would not be the first time. That is for sure. Like ****ing idiots getting a cam sensor code and putting in the new sensor and saying it's still throwing the code. duhh. Then behold the car has like a quart of oil in it.
Moral of the stories is check the most basic things first. I hate component replacers. Same with dumb ****s plugging in like six fuses and blowing them one after another then they go the power outlet is junk. Get a new one. hmmm. I don't know now. Give it to an hourly guy.

Lol reminds me of suburban subaru in Vernon..
Brought the car in to get the frame, suspension checked out..
Not only did they lie about the struts being bent...
They failed to diag the noise from the engine that was a spun bearing... Not to mention every time I go there they ask if I'm on ctsubie :palm:

Thanks, now I'm worried about my car :spin:

As luck would have it that air bag car is back in the shop today. It would not steer to the left. The idiot left the column wiring unsecured and it wrapped itself around the steering column. I just found this out five minutes ago. Aghhhhhhhhhhhhh!
He's getting a written last chance warning today.

Yes, I'm a dealership tech myself.:D Half the guys that come in cant do anything but change brakes. Plus the flate rate system screws your quality.

I still wonder what the EA genration was like for them. That is an engine where you don't diagnose rod noise and bearing being first culprit.
electrical weirdo on one end could a be a t67 bulb on the other.
I did buy one from a dealer. Somebody did know what they were doing.. even with continuities broken in chassis fails.. it stayed just as content in the engine and gave it away at 167k miles.. quiet as a mouse.
the dark side of the electricals... I hope the gurus never fade away into counting on codes and dummy lights. That -12v is not always a short.. subaru uses it like a tesla driven einstein.:unamused:

Most dealerships when recruiting techs don't look for the ones with the best GPA or certifications, they look for who they think will work for the lowest amount and do the most amount of work. If you're fast and a competent mechanic flat rate will be decent. Flat rate doesn't screw quality, bad technicians screw quality. If you won't do a job the same for $15 an hour that you will do for $20 an hour GTFO.

Flate rate does screw with quality IMO. When your hourly you tend to think more logically. Flate rate you always have that "time" in the back of your head. I find this usually blinds a tech into skipping the easy details first.
I'm actually a service manager now. I see this all the time. I have a 27 year Jeep tech veteran, great tech too, that falls into this rut at times.

I agree with the time in the back of your head. Sometimes quality does suffer. I'd like to think I do ok most of the time, but it is a factor. My goal working flat rate is "what's the fastest way I can get this job done right". Sometimes, you will miss something, I don't care who you are.
