Its a porsche! I am totally not going to get tired of that. Thing is in fantastic condition as far as the body goes, never seen winter.
Mechanically I am hoping there aren't many surprises but we all know how old cars are.
Right now we are chasing the cooling system lack of flow. Hopefully it was just the rust that came out when we flushed it or maybe a bum thermostat.

the interior could use a little work, I am going to get some quotes on it and see if it is worth it.

found the bleeder screw I lost last night so I am going to be on the road this afternoon. got to get it registered ASAP and insured.

I drove one of those around. lively four cyl. Nice sound down low, where four cyl inlines die, this one works pretty good.

the owner had one heck of a time with coolant as well. porsche has its lively stoich and compression.. but they did not compensate with good stuff for the head...and if it has its way with cylinders. well, is it is a common result for anything that goes through the problems.

I could guess today, places like felpro would have a multi layer steel for it...decking the head is not a good thing to do either.

..and a monte carlo with a 350 and 64cc heads kills it. (don't ask)

I liked the idea of it, engine up front.. but porsche and even the v8 version, simply did not go over well. I could see a guru who keeps subes strong would like this.. both challenging.

Can't recall off the top of my head what year porsche switched the 944 to efi.. but if you managed to find one that hasthe bosch mechanical fuel injection system, strongly consider doing a carb conversion. They're ALOT more fun. Significant boost in power.

Well.. yeah, so was my 77'.. but it was mfi and the system ****ing blowed. Couldn't keep up on the top end. For example, I never tested these numbers, known conversion is an edelbrock two barrel with an aluminum im. Stock bhp is 140, 135 tq iirc. With the edelbrock, people usually make ~145 and ~150 at the wheels. Gains a plenty! If its efi... disregard this post entirely lol.

This is EFI. Hopefully synthetic oil will clean it out some and liven up the hydraulic lifters. The cooling system is still going to need some care; so much rust came out...

We'll have to bleed the brakes right away, they aren't confidence inspiring for sure. The previous owner had just changed them and the pads have got to be cheap, or the calipers are getting tired. Stainless lines are only $70 for it, and Hawks HPS pads are $90/$70 F/R.

VENTILATED REAR DISCS. Be jealous.

changed the thermostat and the thing still heats the **** up. so either the radiator is clogged and we missed it when he flushed the hell out of it or my waterpump is no good or maybe something completely different I don't know about is going on with the thing.
Drove it to the beach last night with Yint, III, and jojo. in the red the entire time but made it and back with out any real issues.

have insurance on the car and got registered this afternoon alls left is the inspection which I am hoping does not find any serious surprises. well I mean other then the 10 year old tires, the "wooden" brake pedal, and the overheating engine. God I love eighties cars!

Dear Porsche,

Why do you pay 7.7 hours to do a water pump and 3.4 to do the timing belt?

Sincerely,

P.S.: You're all ****ing mad.

serioussubaru
08-14-2011, 07:58 PM
Used coolant flush and got some more rust out. Stabilized the overheating a little. Still need a fresh radiator. Also should rip into the water pump and see if it has any fins on it. Waterpumps are not cheap though from initial searchs.

I really want to get the cooling system dialed before autox and I need to work on the brakes too.
So much to do so little money/time

These cars are so nice.

My father in-law has one, the thing is mint.
84 944 Turbo with 28k on it.
It was his DD for a year untill he almost got rear ended by some drunk.
After that he garaged it and it has seen little driving time.
He only takes it out twice a year, the annivercery of when he got it.
and the annivercery of whe he paid it off, about 25 miles a year.

My wife is hoping it will be left to us/me when he cant drive anymore.

well drive the car to NY state this weekend. managed to create a "dynamic" clutch pedal. Some times it releases late, other times it releases early. The slave cylinder is pissing fluid at this point.

The parts place shipped me a 911 radiator, well technically half a 911 radiator. :unamused:

Other then that things have been swell! Probobly going to AutoX it as is for the hell of it!

Did a compression test. It scored 175, 175, 180, and 180! Means I don't have to worry about head gaskets! :D

I still miss my 77 924 but it had issues constantly clutch was uber stiff and not smooth to let out and used oils and lots of funky electrical things. That mfi system did blow i have to agree. Ut she ran and i beet the bag out of her every time i drove it she had bbs wheels too which i know i shoulda kept
