View Full Version : Painting Side Mirrors (TR SEDANS)

Has anyone attempted to paint the plastic piece on side mirrors? (Those who own a TR sedan). Maybe I am just picky, but I don't like the fact that mine are black. I think they would look much nicer if they were CGM.

Anyone know where to get some CGM spray paint, or a very close match?

If I can find the right paint, I want to sand em, prime, paint, and clear coat em.

You can get touch up paint from exeter subaru, perhaps they have a hook-up for larger amounts. Doesn't hurt to give them a call.

Just call the dealership. You'll get your answer in 2 minutes easy.

Bummer. The only place the could help you out getting the paint match and enough to paint the mirrors would be a auto body shop now I think. Unless someone knows a better idea.

There is definetly a paint site that has the exact match of any vehicle made. I looked into getting it. You can get it anywhere from 1.5 oz bottles to 5 gallon buckets of it. Thing is, I dont remember the site. Dungelman knows and turned me onto it. PM him or call him up to ask.

I just got a PM back from the Exeter Subaru GM.

Robbins in Exeter can match it for us, basically any factory color. I am going to look into that!

Does that paint site offer spray versions?

I buy paints from Robin's all the time for painting bikes. If you go that route, let me know because I get a %15 discount with my account. BTW the smallest amount you can buy top coat is a pint and it might be a lot more expensive than buying a ready mixed spray can because you need the reducer, activator, clear and primer. They don't sell these extras in pints. The smallest is quarts, which will be enough for for way more than your mirrors. Let me know if you need a gun or booth to paint in. I have a sweet new DeVillbiss and a state of the art down draft to paint in.

so my best bet is probably the website, if i can figure out how to get something other than clear coat.

anyone take a look at that? its kinda wack.

I think the metallic is in the clear coat along with some of the tint, like a candy. If that is the case then you need to find out what base is used under the clear. Some factory colors are like this to save money and time in production. Most likely it will be a silver or gray base color. You can also just buy it and just test it out on sample pieces. A can should go a long way.

I was actually looking into purchasing paint from paintscratch.com. If you are concerned with the fact that your paint is listed as "Crystal Gray Metallic Clearcoat," I'm not really sure why they have it listed that way. It does makes it sound like you're purchasing clearcoat, but if you continue with the ordering process, you'll find that they'll actually have it listed as a basecoast color, which is what you're looking for. You will need to order clearcoat as well.

is it bad to use just an off the shelf spray clear coat?

you need to make sure the clear is compatible with the base. If not it will react and make a mess. Go to a paint shop like robbin's and make sure all the products you use will work together.
Here are a few pics of my last two jobs I did. One is a ghost flame job for a sporster and the other is just a plain blue metallic after we installed a wide tire kit and chopped the rear fender. Both bikes took about 100 man hours of prep and body work before I even laid paint .

Alternative: Find wrecked CGM WRX and Pilfer the side mirrors.

anyone else want to get down on this who has a CGM TR sedan and wants their side mirrors painted?

I am sure that the 12.5 ounce can is enough for us to split between 4 mirrors.

Three total cans, primer, base coat, and metallic clearcoat. 60$ including shipping so it would be a $30 venture to paint your own side mirrors.

post it up if your interested
