I noticed a lot of you have quotes in your sigs.
If you have a good one post it up here!
To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental
To reach out to another is to risk involvement,
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self
To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss
To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk to failure.
But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, But he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live. Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom. Only a person who risks is free.
The pessimist complains about the wind; The optimist expects it to change; And the realist adjusts the sails.
- William Arthur Ward, ""To Risk""

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag."
- Father Dennis Edward O'Brian, USMC
"The ultimate weakness of violence
is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks
to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies
it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you
cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.
Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not
murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases
hate...Returning violence for violence multiples
violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already
devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness;
only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out
hate: Only love can do that."
-Martin Luther King, Jr

He who lives by the sword will perish by the sword. And history is replete with the bleached bones of nations that failed to follow this command. We must follow nonviolence and love."

“If a man, holding a belief that he was taught in childhood or persuaded of afterwards, keeps down and pushes away any doubts that arise about it in his mind, purposely avoids the reading of books and the company of men that call into question or discuss it, and regards as impious those questions that cannot be easily asked without disturbing it – the life of that man is one long sin against mankind.”

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made so and kept so by the exertions of better men than him self.

"Any ship can be a mine-sweeper...once."
My Commanding Officer said this to me once when we were underway in the Meditteranean during a 3 month deployment in support of OIF. It was late at night, something like 2 or 3am and I was on the Bridge during one of my watches. The Captain came up to the bridge, not in uniform, just to have a chat. An E-3 with less then a year in service talking with an O-5 with over 25 years service like they were on the same level. The OOD (Officer of the Deck), who was an O-2, told me after the Captain left that he had never seen the Captain talk to anyone one like he had talked to me.

You can learn a lot more from listening than you can from talking. Find someone with whom you don't agree in the slightest and them to explain themselves at length. Then take a seat, shut your mouth, and don't argue back. It's physically impossible to listen with your mouth open.

I recently had to write a paper in my literature class based on a quote that inspires me the most, and one that contradicts the common belief.
I looked up to see if anyone had an "Inspirational" themed quote thread going but only found a movie based thread.
So tell me, what is your favorite quote? Whether it's inspirational, motivational, or just plain funny.
I wrote my paper on Dirk Bogarde.
“But, after all, one cannot, at sixty-two, look back down the corridor of one's life and not have some doubts about the journey one has made. The doors which one opened are now all closed. The doors one did not dare open remain shut. The corridor is dark; only ahead is lighter. So one turns and proceeds in that direction. To go back is madness. To turn left or right, at this stage, is both exhausting and dangerous.”
