so today i installed my short shifter... had to take the linkage out because where the c-clip was located...not in the easy STI location but on the bottom.... any who got that installed and replaced the bushings.. love the shifting much better and crisper... but i can hear the tranny through the shifter now....
could this be
A. because the 5MT Linkage has bad bushings...
B. tranny is low on fluids (checking tomorrow)
C. you opinion

I believe so yes. I'm guessing his old bushings were shot so he never noticed any of the viberations due to mushy bushings. yes?

Ya, it is normal to have more noise. It was the first thing I noticed.

RCKSTR
09-22-2011, 11:24 PM
you will really feel a difference (in a good way). its not really that loud, its like having an aftermarket fuel pump, turn the radio on and everything else isn't as bad

Yes the delrin bushings are at least supposed to be stiffer, which again, accounts for the noise. Do a rear shifter bushing and tranny mounts and you'll REALLY hear it...

harden the mounts needs stronger fluid.
refer to an older "thicker" time of fluids.
(I put tractor trailer differential "mud" in mine as part of the mix)
just welding a chassis away from oem flex points, or a cage can trigger new noise.

NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) is expected with any bushing replacement or upgrade like everyone else has said. Wait to hear the noise if you ever do rear diff and subframe bushings......

NVH is a magical thing.. I remember when I put my beatrush pitch stop in my 98 obs and the noise the first time I started it again..

Agree about the rear diff bushings. When I had one on there it was not bad at all. A few months ago when I R&R'd the diff and put the other Whiteline insert in. Now when I roll into the throttle on the highway I can hear it and feel it through the drivers seat.
I did install the STI tranny mount years ago and have never hread or felt it. But it did make a huge difference in the way the wagon shifted on power.

I had Group N mounts in my car for a month, the noise drove me nuts so I put the OE's back in there.

They made the whole car louder, gear noise, engine noise etc. Not a problem when I'm driving alone, the radio is cranked up anyway but holding a conversation for a long ride it became annoying.

My car has always made so much road noise I just accept it now. I kinda like it. If you don't wanna talk to the person next to ya you can say you can't hear them. and it puts my daughter to sleep. Win win!!
