I'd suggest tirerack.com.
I've bought all but one set of my tires from them.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Altimax+Arctic&partnum=345QR7AMAXA&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

The Altimax Arctic is the cheapest tire listed in that size, and it's a great choice for an inexpensive winter tire. I run them on my Battle Legacy.

I've got a set of 225/50/R17 Hankook Icebear W300'sbut one of the tires has a gash in the sidewall. I'd let them go cheap

Horsepower is usless if spent spinning. It is absolutely possible to have just as much fun with a thinner tire. I ran 185/65/14s instead of 175/70/14s on my fwd impreza. It gripped nice and slid around awesome. My 175/70/14 summers have nowhere near the grip the 185/65s had. Surprisingly I find myself slipping the tires often.

i know but if you spin right it can be fun... in the winter i run a 205 and im planning on running a 230 next summer

I've never had a problem running wider tires in the winter. 185s are for Hondas....

225/50 are ideal for GRs and 205/50s for GDs. That being said, I have 245/45 Blizzaks that were perfect last year.

Winterforce it a great alternative to the Generals. Town fair tire has Coursier MSR snows that are unbelievable. My plow truck goes anywhere with them.

You're 5x114.3 so you need 2005+ BBS wheels. 2004 STis were 5x100.

Just a heads up:

Just because you have a snow tire doesn't make you inivincible. Slow down when it snows. Visibilty is usually impaired, there are other drivers, and you will still have a hard time stopping. not as bad as on a all-season, but still worse then normal. When it is snowing hard, SLOW DOWN, give extra space and brake early. Snow tires are nice, but they aren't going to make you immortal.

:truestory: I still drive cautious no matter what... Even if my car is awd I go the same speed everyone is going . Don't wanna risk my life, others, and damage to my car :D

See you suckers doing 80 in a guard rail. I'll make sure to beep. and laugh.

I personally like the Dunlop Winterspot M3's - best snow tire I've had in the dry performance wise, I dont need all out snow traction because the roads are clear 99% of the time.

Seraphinwolf

^^ Chris I just put them back on last night! I loved the deep snow traction for Dunlop DS2's but the better out of snow traction from the M3's are great!

winterforce is awesome studded.

no direction for high speed (counter rotated or directional) but it will get you going for normal speeds.

the skinny ones give big footprint on ice, but weight rating for them is not good..even my little sube killed at them (bubbled sidewalls).

I'd go with 7 or 8 inch tread width on factory wheels if to go at it again.
195/60
205/60 etc..
going too fat is silly.

Proper driving in the winter, is simply knowing what your car can handle, and obviously what you yourself as the driver can handle. I have some pretty extensive training on driving in the snow and all, but I never push my limits.

I have a set of 225/45-17 studded Mastercraft Glaciergrip II's I used last winter for about 4k miles that I'd let go for $300. They're in storage in Vt right now.

They were beasty on my LGT.

blizzaks are the best performance winter tyre around

98Wagoon
12-19-2011, 09:33 AM
Thats not an entirely true statement nor is it based in fact. The dunlop ds2/ds3's are nearly the exact same as the blizzak ws60/ws70's in every category. There are also several other tires that have equal performance.
