After a few months of research and bargain shopping I've started my new engine build. I'm starting with a used 03 2l block and crank in good condition that i just dropped off at the machine shop this morning for a bore and hone job and possible pinning to beef up the cylinders. I'm also getting the crank polished and balanced for 10k rpm.
For the internals I'm going with weisco pistons and scat or eagle rods, all forged of course.
Besides the machine work, I'll be assembling and installing this motor my self. I'll be doing all the tuning also.
I just picked up a set of heads today off of craigs list from an 04 wrx in like new condition for $300. They will be getting a set of 272 cams and new valves/springs.
Power goals will be between 350-450 whp depending on fuel with either a 20g or FP green.
I wanted something different from the 2.5 swap guys that can rev out and be a little better on gas. I'll post updates and pics soon.
If any one is interested in getting their hands dirty and want to see the assembly or help out any where else along the way let me know.

Yeah so many people pass up the 2.0 WRX engine as a junk box.
Set of forged rods and pistons and that thing can be a rev happy animal.
Personally I would talk to this engine shop and sleeving it. I know you aren't going for huge horsepower but with a sleeved 2.0 you could dump in 30lbs of boost. Nitrous. Whatever you want and still rev it up to about 9000rpm.

Sleeving isn't out of the question, I just don't know if the cost is worth it for my application. But I'll see what the shop thinks.

Darton makes sleeves for it.
I would do it in a second. Talk about bulletproof.
Thing would be a ****ING TANK!

Machine shop update:
The block and crank were checked out and the block is getting punched out 0.020" to 92.5mm and the crank was in great condition so it just needs a light polish. I ordered a set of forged 8.35:1 Wiesco pistons and scat rods. The pistons are back ordered now so they wont be in for 3 weeks. When they arrive, they will be fitted and the crank+rotating assembly will be balanced. The guy who is balancing it is 65 years old and one of the first guys ever to mount a drill press on a balancing machine back in 1959! He's like the founding father of engine balancing!
Next is head work. I have a set of bare heads that I'm fitting over sized valves and springs to next month. I'll post some pics next week of the head work.

Well the rods, crank and pistons were junk, and the block needed more that .040 taken out of #4 i think, to make it right. I still have the block if you want it back of I can just junk it for you.
The machine shop called today and said all the work was done, so I'm picking it up on Friday. I'm going on a short trip with the Air Guard next week, so I wont be doing any assembly until I get back.
Next step is head work:D

These pistons are sweet!! they shave a lot of weight off from the stoc ones and the coated skirts are a plus.
