View Full Version : Gear sets or Trans swap?

I have been researching gear sets and transmissions for several months with anticipation that my tranny will be going shortly. I need to hear other peoples opinions about this topic. I was fixed on getting the ppg gears for a while but recently DS1 motorsports released a sick set of gears that i am really looking at getting, nearly half the price of adrewtechs and lower gearing, 1-4 stock 5. I really am leaning towards the gears because its so much less of a hassle, i dont have to gather all the parts, waste 2 or 3 days swapping over the entire transmission and then rigging the speed sensor to work on the different transmission.

MFACTORY gear set.
-just the gears
-rear diff being the weakest point now
$2300 + install of $200 if they do it.
Trans Swap
-Tranny, 3.70 Final Drive
- Rear Diff, 3.70 Gear Ratio
- WRX Driveshaft
- Clutch, pressure plate and Flywheel
- Clutch Slave cylinder
- OEM clutch hose
- Clutch Fork
- OEM Shifter assembly
- Tranny Crossmember
- Group-N Tranny Mount
~$1200 + ~1- hours of abuse on my part to get it all in.
trans swap will cost less utilizing used parts, but to be able to handle 300+ hp and abuse at the track, i dont think it will last much longer than the L tranny.
Lets hear some thoughts!

knowing that you will track/(ab)use it. I would go with building the stronger tranns. That will save you the aggravation of having to go back in to fix what rebroke

I would swap and get a WRX tranny then a year or so down the road or whenever you blow it, put an R/A gearset in that.

I did the r/a gear set and its not worth it. for way less you can get legacy gears that are just as strong. If I was to do it over again I would of went with ppg's in my 04 wrx.

I have herd a lot of good stuff about the m Factory gears and at your power levels it would be a good match.

Just go till it breaks then you will make your decision...I would go ppg then you would ever have to worry about it..but the drivability will be affected

If you spend that you are nearly at a 6 speed swap.

Talk to kgj. He may not want my 2004 sti tranny, converted diff and driveshaft.
Then you get 3.9 instead of 3.7 and better autocross ratios.
Then you could buy it from me.

6speed alone is $3k.
thats over budget. by alot. i dont even wanna spend the 2k on gears if i go that route. Im going to be looking around on ebay to find a used tranny, 06+. they are pretty reliable and can handle the power i plan on gettting.

The package that I am in limbo of buying is $3K for the whole swap minus the clutch and flywheel. That includes a nice short through linkage on top of the tranny, drive shaft, rear end, and slave cylinder.

Wait, so the 6 speed is still available or is Kevin selling it now? What are your new plans, Kevin? I might be interested in the 6....then Rob can buy my 5...and we will all be happy.

Sort of available. It is Kevin's until he changes his mind and I gave him a cheap deal on it. It is well below what I paid for all of it too. I should sell it for way more though.

Well if I can get a deal on it let me know, whoever's possession it is in currently. I can sell Rob my stuff and do the 6 swap.

I am just the current owner. I told Kevin it was his unless he changes his mind and he has put money down.

Rallyspec Type STi gearset maybe?

It's what I wanted to get in my RS if I ever had gotten it swapped. Taller than stock RS gearing, but shorter than a WRX iirc.

Robk0000

no, im not going to be buying anything until spring, or when my tranny goes boom.
Nate8409
01-30-2009, 04:18 PM
Yeah so if spring comes around and you are interested Rob let me know. Same with you Terry. If one of you guys comes up with the money I would like to get it gone. Just losing money on it each day it sits unsold.

I vote MFactory. Dylan knows his **** and he'll get you what you need. He's also cool as **** too. He's letting me hold all the crap I want from him there at the shop and sending it to me as i pay it off. Like my Brembos and other goodies.

What parts? I am selling it as a complete package. Only question would be the type of axles you have. I am only asking 3k for the tranny, correct ratio r160 diff, driveshaft, starter, slave, fork, Stub shafts, new axle seals and clips.
Don't know about RS axles though.
