The Globe reported today that Patrick is considering gas tax increases of 5 to 29 cents per gallon. The latter increase would raise the state’s rate to 52.5 cents per gallon, the highest in the nation.

EXACTLY!!! You can't give a dollar without taking it from someone who more than likely earned it.
That's the new America coming.

I own 4 cars but would not care if gas tax went up .50/ gal.
I hate taxes more than anyone and hate wastefull taxes even more. But, nothing is free and goverment is a business, and business that is now running in the red.
Thank Reagan for deregulating trucking and busting up the rail unions, it put 450% more trucking on our "free" roads. Thus, since the 80s US and Mass roads have not been maintained to meet the use load.
Taxing the road users more directly is the only way to fairly tax road use. IMO pike bridge, tunnel fees ought to be doubled.
And, if you want to see the future of US auto tax/cost to operate look to Europe.
I'm not a "steel from the rich and give from the poor liberal", I just know the government cannot contiune to provide the same or better level of service w/o increased taxes.

I unerstand trying to make more money through taxes, believe me I've been for certain tax increases when no one else like it (and yes I took conciderable ****** for it), but there are certain positions in govornment, certain jobs that are useless (no offence to anyone but its true). A certain degree of consolodation is nessisary, big govorment is not always a good thing. That said, if I know that the additional taxes will go to improving our roads (which suck pretty universally) or even more important, our bridges (many of which are on the verge of falling down) im ok with it... I never like spending more money, and ill complain with the best of them; but deep down I know its necessary. However if it goes to some bloody politicans 100,000$ salary, or some F***n new socialist program... I will be very angry (not that my anger is going to change anything but I will be angry nevertheless *shakes fist*)
