We've been doing this over at GRM.com, and frankly I need more. OP posts a question, the person who answers it correctly gets to post their bit of automotive trivia. We'll try to keep Google out of this one.:)

Sh*t. I guess I need a new question. Further research on the topic proves inconclusive... LB is close to my original answer of 1899, but 1899 makes no sense as there were already non-diesel style internal combustion engines around by then.

I'm now bringing up results for 1839, 1855, 1891, and 1903, depending upon type.

New question(maybe easier):

"Name the auto manufacturer who finished first and second at the 2000 Maine Forest Rally."
