So is a 2.2L from a 96 legacy (phase 1?) an interference motor or not? I'm getting different reports from varying places, and its driving me bat **** crazy. Thanks in advance for the help, you Helper McHelpertons.

I know the 97 is... Don't think the 96 is though because of the valve set up.

96 is a tricky year... Timing belt gets changed every 60k and it has a different valve, sleeve and piston (TDC) setup than the 97.
Have you tried NASTYCOCKS?

60K!!!! really? I thought it was 100K or something. either way, I keep trying to find stuff on nasioc, but I suck at searching, and keep getting distracted by mick_the_ginge and his b.a. wagon.

Or just buy a 97 motor and know what you have..... ;) I just happen to have said sellable 97 2.2 motor if you are interested. Please buy it from me cause I keep being tempted to do stupid things with it... Like get dual port RS heads and a cheap turbonetics kit and tear it down and rebuild the whole thing and throw it in my friend's 96 Impreza L.

Would a 97 just bolt in, or are connectors and whatnot different. Plus, I am trying to keep this car cheap, but for ****s and giggles, pm me what you'd be looking for it. If I crunched my valves, a new motor may be the easiest/ cheapest route.

Yep, other than the battery, it seems real good. Gotta get a 2.2 SOHC center timing cover, and get the stripped bolts out. Fix the headlite wiring, and car should be good to go.

Nothing we can't tear apart again, subarus are like legos. If I hang onto this stuff any longer I'm gonna have to buy another car to put it on.

Apparently a 1996 Legacy with a 2.2. With the crank 90 degrees off of where is should be, and turning over for a while, there was no damage to valves. I'd think the timing would be pretty off and so if anything were to happen, it would have then. But I drove it last nite, runs fine and smooth, and has all the power it should, so obviously no lost compression. Hooray!

well for the ej18 an ej18t could be made out of the ej22t heads I have laying around and my spare Legacy SS parts or your turbo piping.

But that still leaves me with the fueling problem needing to be upgraded. I'm thinking about just putting a stock 1.8 back in it, I really hate to see it sit around, not being driven.
Legacy update: Still running strong!!

I meant more like fuel management if I were to piece together some sort of hybrid 1.8/2.2t turbo motor. The cost of a greddy emanage is about what I'd pay for an ej20g

Why not find a stand alone like I used PowerFC or something? For the price of the eManage(I'd concidered this kind of route in the past before deciding WAY against it) The piggy-back and intercepter options only go so far.

Again, price is a big issue right now. If there was a more economical piggy back, I would use it. Alot of the 1.8t guys use emanage though, and have had good results. I looked into in quite a bit last summer, but decided against it when I put the 2.5 in.

:p Tehe! Well I'm in a better situation where I'll be getting a Standalone for $500 only been installed in one car and only used for a total of less than a mile. ;) It's not an old system either. Guess you just gotta get lucking and save more or less a grand in cost randomly by chance.

Agreed. Though there are like 20 different good solid setups you can do with them Phase I or II. Like I"ve seen EJ257 crank and rods to stroke it. 2.2 heads and internals into a EJ257 block for a high compression dirt-x-crossing OBS, all sorts of turbo stuff, and a million mostly stock but reworked 2.2's

YOu find an EZ30D like you wanted yet? It's actually really under rated as far as engine's go. Cams, PnP heads, intake, exhaust manifold, and exhaust. the ECU can take over the rest and it should be opensource able and non-imobilizer. OR!!! You could get a standalone to run it to. I'd like to build a twin turbo EZ30D for an SVX chasis lightened up by like 600lbs or so.

meh, im looking at buying a donar sometime next year, turnng it over to a friend thats a 20 yr subaru tech and shop foreman at the local dealer. the work will be done at his private shop, complete engine/driveline swap; the dash will be custom fitted to the interior as to elimnate as much retro as possible. retro the headlight sockets, and some other piddly ****, he doesnt thinkit will be that hard really, so im pretty confident. just gotta make sure i get a decent donar, i'd prefer a barely totalled by
roll or rear-ender, we'll see
