View Full Version : It's Gear Oil Time

One of the most obnoxious FAQs at NASIOC is "what gear oil should I use?" .. Maybe it's because everybody has a different answer based on their experience.
My 'factory' gearbox oil was fine. Never a grind, always pretty smooth. But like a fool I changed it around 60k miles, and used NAPA cheapo 75w-90. It's a bit soupy on very cold mornings, and doesn't hold up well in high heat/stop and go traffic.
My own version of the infamous FAQs are:
1. I want to use Redline Lightweight or Superlight synthetic in the gearbox. Am I crazy? [I would try Valvoline dino, but can't seem to find it].
and
2. Can Redline be bought on the Seacoast? Paying to ship this stuff for use in a TS would be a waste of time.

North Ursalia swears by Redline Superlight in his '00 RS's gigglebox. The last retail place I saw that in on the seacoast was Shlep Boys on the Newington/Portsmouth line, behind Circuit City.
Bavarian Auto Sports carries Redline I believe. I'm going to try some 75w-90ns soon in mine and see how it goes.

That "I need redline, I need super special crap, redline, royal purple."
I am using lubriguard 80w90 from the work 55gallon drum. Seems to work great from me. When I first put it in it was a little tacky until it broke in but now it is great. No problems at all for me.
Gear oils are user based. You can get some with a lot of friction modifier and the transmission will shift like a dream, protection is not as good. So you can go syncro or bearing. Up to the user.

I bought my redline oil at Turner Motorsports in Amesbury, MA. I have an extra quart left over of 75W90 which is more than enough to fill the rear diff, let me know if you want it

"Lubriguard". Nice name. :) If it works, all the better.
Rear diff is all set - got some Valvoline synthetic in there now. Thx for the offer though.
Interesting that Altezza Boys had Redline. Will have to take a run in there. Bav Auto is worth a shot. I'd move in there if I could. :)

Word... keep in mind I haven't been in there since I moved out of Portsmouth, though... it's been 4-5 years, so who knows what the hell they carry now.

Just bringing this one back from the dead to see if anyone has more suggestions for gear oil. The Kartboy bushings just show off how crunchy 3rd gear is getting(even with a close rev match). Neglecting this was fine when I just driving the car around town, but this heap is going back into highway commuter duty as of 3pm today.

After about a billion reviews on Subaru Go Extra S I am going to get the 5 gallon pail and use that in my trannys.
My Sentra is well know for the 5th gear hub and syncro to wear out to the point of not working so I am going to get some of this stuff and put it in the Sentra and both the Subarus. 5 Speed and 6 Speed. Not 100% on changing the WRX fluid because it shifts like a dream and has responded well to Royal Purple which is what I put in last time I changed the fluid.

Just a heads-up on the Redline lubes--RIC Racing I believe carries it down in Bow.

I've been running redline for the past 50k or so miles, changing it every 20k, pushing a 20g with meth and I don't have any difference in shifting from when I first bought the car. I think the car is a fluke because I have made many 1/4 mile passes and hard launches and the tranny holds up, knock on wood. No grinding or trouble shifting, and it goes into first at 10 mph with a rev match.

If anybody wants to buy some GO Extra S off me I am going to have extra and I bought a little pump to make it easy to put in.
