I have a 199 legacy wagon that i'm trying to eek some power out of. I picked up an outback hood with a scoop in the hopes of using it as a functional scoop with a top mount intake. I was told this was a bad idea.

My question is why is this a problem?

I think it'd be an easy way to suck water into your motor...

That would suck

the scoop is fully open. there 's a large plastic shroud that blocks all but a little air. water would have to try really hard to get in. does this make any diiference?

meant to say the scoop is not fully open.

...which would limit the amount of cold air the intake could gather by quite a factor, thus reducing power rather than increasing it, as the intake would instead suck up mostly hot air from the engine bay. By the same token, RCKSTR has a good point with water. That shroud can be removed, but then you're likely to get water in on a rainy day, and hydrolock sucks.

It's not a unique idea, either. There was a small run of "Gravelsports" intakes that used the same concept, which were created for scooped GC Impreza's with no intercooler. If you wanna know more about the concept, you can always do some searching about those intakes.

right on. thanks for the info. i will definitely look into it. i would really like for the scoop to be functional.

You could get a cold air intake AND have an open hoodscoop. The hoodscoop can be open and cool the engine bay off and have a regular CAI that goes into the wheel well with way less chances of hydrolock. However, the gains would be almost the same as having just the CAI because the cooling of the engine bay would not be enough to notice. I am a level 9 wizard so I have had a few brews, but I think this makes sense. I know my grammar and spelling are spot on though. Shred it!

A CAI into the fender also has a high risk of hydrolock if you drive through lots of puddles or in wet weather. ;)

Depending who you ask, some people argue that open hoodscoops reduce engine cooling potential (at least in N/A cars or cars with no TMIC.) It creates a second opening that air enters at velocity and disturbs the stream coming through the radiator. I don't care enough to worry about it (N/A car with an SRI and open hoodscoop,) but these arguments can get pretty intense. I've seen people start busting out diagrams and calculations on this topic.

With this system, it might cool the intake a bit -- a tiny bit, right before the throttle body, but not enough to notice at all. Honestly, there's no real reason to worry about the scoop being functional on an N/A car, to get it to accomplish anything useful would be far too tedious a project to undertake. Just open it up and enjoy it, plan to swap or build the car someday and know you'll be making it useful then.

Word of warning too, taking that plate out will let ALOT of salt in during the winter. Gross.
