View Full Version : Racing comic book based in New England!!
Hi everyone, I am relatively new here mostly lurking about and reading posts, looking for parts, you know the usual. As of right now I am in the process of getting my comic published. I am currently working with Paladin publishing on a martial arts manual where I am the illustrator. It is basically a rewrite ofChinese Ring Daggers: The Ultimate Close-Quarter Weapons (http://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Ring-Daggers-Ultimate-Close-Quarter/dp/0873644441/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258304511&sr=8-1) by Ricky Pickens, (http://www.amazon.com/Ricky-Pickens/e/B001KIK3RG/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1258304511&sr=8-1) The origional author and Brian Hall are writing a different version as the origional was take off the market by the US government due to it's uhm...well it was basically a how to make a someone bleed to death in minutes manual lol. Hopefully the new version will be out soon so I will finally have a published book.
Anyway, I have been working on this comic for years and am officially in the works of getting this out there and soon!
What i am looking for are people who know of roads anywhere in your state that would make good road courses. I am looking for more of moutain passes such as Bule Hills in Massachusetts , and the Cabot trail in Maine, I am sure there are hundreds more and the best thing is google maps will give me an exact course map of the whole road.
I would like to start going out to locations and taking pictures, or if any of you would be so generous as to get pics and mail them that would be col, although I would probably be going there anyway just to get more genuine aspect of it.
I will reveal some more details about the comic as they come, I have a bunch of covers drawn so i will find them and scan at least the first cover so you all can get an idea of my art style and some details about the story too. Right now I am trying to get a feel for how you all feel about this and how much support i can get from the locals to make this happen. I already have Rhode Island and parts of Mass covered but the more north i go the fewer people I know so, I would like that to change soon :).
I will get some stuff posted soon for now i will reveal that one of the main characters drives an E21 if you know what that is
**mods feel free to move this if i posted in the wrong area

<--- kinda a comic book geek
ill be sure to give you guys all the info as I get stuff done, I seem to have lost my notebook with my completed covers in it so I am going to have to look for it lol. I'll draw something up at some point if i can't find it today though.

do you have a deviant art account?
I do but i haven't uploaded anything to it...kinda slacked on that one. All i can find right now is just random artwork that has noting to do with this comic/graphic novel. I'll draw up a new cover for the first issue I guess heheh

Huricain Mtn Rd in N Conway NH as well as 113 from Rt2 South though the White Mountains Nat. Forest (just before you go from Maine to NH)
thanks for all the really good info! I have a good feeling about putting together some realy authentic places to have as settings for the races. I still haven't found my original cover art book, so I drew a new one for the first issue.
here it is as I think i am going to have it appear on the cover, the art is still rough, no shading or color just yet but soon heheh
http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv269/XiseTK/LZcovers.jpg
also here is the complete pic I drew uncropped, kind of sucks that i can't really fit the whole thing on an 8.5x11, but that is the standard format for a graphic novel, anyways, let me know what you think, the to in the pic are basically the in characters.
http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv269/XiseTK/coverpic1.jpg
once this is complete it will have the name of the comic on top of course ( i am not going to tell the name just yet for copyright purposes) and also a backround and all that good stuff. Give me some feedback, good or bad, the first issue is pretty important so i want it to be as good as it can be

Mmmmm.... 240! I'll get a list of NH. There are a surprising lot of "small" sections no one knows about or that would make a good course or at least training courses. Don't ask me how I know. ;)
I'm more than willing to help out.
Is this gonna be more graphicnovel structured or comic structured?

NICE!!!
Keep us posted on progress!
I was thinking of going graphic novel but I might actually split it up into comics and do it that way as well. Seems like graphic novels are the ways to go now though lol. I am curious to see which people would prefer...perhaps a poll of some sort.
I must say now that I have started this, I really remember now how hard cars are to draw lol

I would think doing comics then a trade paper back would be the best.
add bonus content to boost sales on the trade paper back
ever thought of doing CG for the cars a few other series do that
it would make the cars look and feel more inorganic though

Yeah getting porportions on cars and body lines is way harder than people for me too. :( Then again I didn't put as much time into that as people. Which reminds me I new to start again before I get out of practice.

Actually I was going to pay for one of Randy on the hood of his car
I would be willing to do portraits of peoples cars, naked dudes however costs extra, A LOT extra lol. I could use the practice drawing cars and the extra $$ to help me ride all over NE taking pictures of roads and whatnot. Not to mention it would help with this current poorness situation I am in lol....after all how much ramen noodles can once person eat before they go insane?
yeah I was thinking about CG but i like the hand drawn look, it might take more time but I think it is worth it. My ultimate goal would be to get an animated series after the comics come out so maybe when and if then I will look into CG cars....although hand animated cars would look pretty sweet too

11-16-2009, 05:47 PM
So basicly a NE Initial D. That's whatnonwas gathering from your first post anyways.
I'd help ya on the poor front by buying the Ti but yeah at the moment it's gerringtight Here to.

haha i was thinking initial d: new england edition too hahaha
well I most certainly get some inspiration from mangas like initial D or Over REv but yeah seems like you get what I am going for hehehe. And yes I could basically only do a portrait from a picture, it i really hard to get a cars intricate little details from memory, it is hard to draw car period my specialty is really drawing anime style people but I can draw anything for the most part just a matter of taking your time.
But yes, i know NE has tons of great roads and I would love to get a chance to drive on them and maybe get to meet some locals and get some ideas for characters for later installments of this series so who knows some of you guys might actually be inspiration for some character designs

Well damn get up to NH and I'll show you all the back roads. It's a maze of blind turns behind me. :D The best kind!
I am definitely game for that, before i come up i need to get some new wheel seals and bearings then I will be good to go.....i'd like to come up before and after it snows too. I got some Goodride SW601 snow tires I am going to be running soon so i really want to test em out if any of you guys want some portraits done PM me, you'd be helping me take care of some much needed stuff lol...I need a clutch anyone try the excedy clutches for the RS? I was thinking of the stage 1 flywheel and clutch kit...anyone use this? hopefully it isn't noisy
Seraphinwolf
11-18-2009, 12:19 AM
I hear it's pretty much OEM. I'm personally going big clutch wise. But I'll be needing it. If I had the scratch I'd buy the Ti off you and you'd 've all set paying for the maintainance.
I might stick to OEMish for now, my car is basically stock power wise so it should hold. As for you, busy buying all sorts of trannies and whatnot to buy my exhaust lol. can't say i blame you, i should have started somewhere else and gotten the exhaust last like anyone else would have haha.
I think even if I end up going with a turbo setp I would want to trade my Ti for a stromung, after owning the Ti for a year and not using it i just think the stromung 3" or 2.5" would be more my style. although i do like the Ti a lot it seems like ages before i would be able to use it ....too much stuff needs to be fixed before i can start getting fun stuff
Seraphinwolf
11-19-2009, 12:02 AM
What about an SPT? Biggest reason I picked up an SPT was the fact that they say it's mellowed at low RPMs and you get the roar when you open up. :P Trying to not atract TOO much Cop attention just yet. But if interested... Looking to trade? LOL
Yeah I'll get a group of pics together of my cars if you want stuff to do more portrait work for the portfolio to put into the comic and what not. Or just a link to my albums. But yeah let me know when you want to check out roads in my area and I'll get a plan together.
Seraphinwolf
11-19-2009, 12:11 AM
I just need to pay Rooster the last ofthe money for it before I can trade+ cash it.
ok man keep me posted, i really had my heart set on the stromung if I get rid of this, i am still waiting to hear back from my job at the airport so I might want to get myself a GC and end up keeping this exhaust...so it all hinges on me getting my job back at TF Green...if it would snow over here i would be already working for sure lol where is RI's snow I mean wtf!!
I think this exhaust would look awesome on a GC chassis for sure looks kind of ricey on a GD RS though....hey if you want when you get enough $$ to get this exhaust toss me some extra $$ and i'll draw you up a complete concept pic of Gaddis :)
threadjacking and exhausts aside I am going to post the first few pages here as a teaser after I get all my patents and copyrights in order. so sit tight I'll post the cover sans title because nothing has petents yet lol so you get a nice cencored cover haha

i smell TALENT!
slow going so far, I haven't had time to work on this but now that X Mass is behind us I am going to get a crackin :).
I am going to let you guys know that there won't be any Subarus in my comic until 1/2 way through the main story...just don't want to disappoint anyone looking for Subies right off the rip. Eventually both main characters drive imprezas though so you will just have to read the entire thing!! lol
I don't want to reveal any details just yet, as for right now I need to take soooooo many pictures of my local roads and frankly it would be so much easier if I had a helicopter or something to get good pics haha, I want the locations people see to be very real down to the last detail so of course I need tons of good pictures of the roads that will be featured..and it is a lot more work than i initially though but it's all good. All this hard work will be worth it in the end :)

yO.... ALL the roads where I live represent some serious drives.... We had NEFR here, we have miles and miles of mountain roads winding in and out of the hills... All that wonderful pavement with the option for miles and miles of desolate logging roads for the "sand people" in the crowd.....
OH GAWD...Rte 26 through Grafton Notch state park, through Errol and up and over Dixville notch and back.... oh man on the way back U can take a left onto East B-hill Road or Andover Road (depending on UR map) through to the andover annex, to rte 120, out to Coos canyon... and thrn if UR feeling froggy U can stop in at the "South Arm" stage of NEFR and check it out....errr, it may B covered with snow right now as it is pretty much NOTHINGNESS out there, I do know one or two people who own camps out there...
Not to mention we have all the roads around Mexico Rec. Park and Concord Pond.... and um... Due to contrary belief these roads are in fact pre-exisitng trails and roads.... I LOVE hearing people say..."oh don't drive on those we MAY loose the rally".... Guess what folks.... Peeps been driving on those long before NEFR was here, crashing on them, drinking on them, partying on them...living on them... IF NEFR was to loose concord pond because some kid crashed on the road, got caught drinking out there, lighting camp fires, smoking weed etc, etc... It would have been gone a long tine ago.... Same with Mexico rec. park and south arm.... Living in a town that see's $$$ from NEFR I can tell U straight up that towns like MExico, Rumford and the town I live in are in NO hurry to see NEFR to go away...
where can I send some of the pictures/movies I have made of these roads? I could post the pixx easy enough but the movies R a no go... they may or may not represent velocities above and (way)beyond the reccomended speed limit as set forth by the state or federal governments...
Oscar_Meyer
12-28-2009, 07:29 AM
damm dude... we could even head down the road that has an orchard on it that Steven King purchased; just so the owners would NOT loose it to the bank and risk having condo's put up somewhere where Mr. King could see from his property or in his day to day travels...
\
On the morbid side..although not 100% sure where it is the location the Mr. King almost lost his life many years ago is nearby... I have a friend whose mom was one of his grade school teachers, I am sure he knows where it is... Not that U would want to see it or not that it is any special type of historical marker... what it is is the spot the almost cost him his life and almost took his gift of writing from the world.... the entire area has a weird energy as well as some RIPPING roads..
hmm very very interesting, you can send them to my e-mail xisetk@hotmail.com, i would love to see what you have up there! As for the start of the comic I need to take some pics for myself as for the first bit it is strictly in RI. As any of you know that RI has limited ammount of roads that are race worthy just due to the condition of them..I can name 6 roads that are long enough and twisty enough to be road raced...so once the characters are bored of them there will be a NE tour needed :)
So that would basically be like the first collection maybe 20 or more volumes, then I am going to take a break and do some "data collecting" so I'll be visiting a bunch of you guys in VT, MA, NH and ME for some road tours and picture taking. Sounds like you are all more than willing to help out so I know the comic will have an authentic feel as far as the areas outside RI that I am not familiar with so that's good, just what I was looking o get out of this. Nothing worse than readings something about your hometown and saying to yourself "this is bull****, that's not how it is at all." I am sure you all know what I mean

Trying to find some good models or die cast cars so I have more reference for cars @ different angles...
Lol I need quite a bit, I am going to need the following car models;
E21, S13 coupe&hatch, jdm &usdm front ends,s14, Gc8, gda-gdb, e30, e12, gf8. And probably many many more. Since this is going to be a published work, I can't put up an entire issue, so I am just going to upload just the first racing sequence. Should be enough to whet some apperites

^lulz, nice OBS man
What do you mean "may not exist"? Have to have GF's!
I MEANT no OBS model kits I can buy, assemble, take pics of and draw from, or just look at and draw from....tough to remember all the details w/o a picture for reference.
if you find a scale model kit of an impreza wagon let me know! Since it is based in the states, there will be plenty of USDM and euro cars as well, maybe even a truck or 2.
it is more than likely going to be in a semi fictitious setting based around real locales, I will use real makes and models of the cars, but places like Walmart and Burgerking etc,are puns on the name because I am not paying for licensing to advertise for these bastards. I believe I don't have to pay to use makes and models of vehicles though because it doesn't utilize and compare vehicle specs across manufactures like a video game would, I will have to look into that further though....either way I the year this comic is starting is in the senior year of highschool, 2001, following the class of 02 and 03 as major cast members.
so most of the cars will be early 90s and 80s models, as they are driven by 17-19yr old students. Hopefully I will get some more time to finish this first issue so I can show it around while I work on the second one. Soon I will get a new screen for my tablet so I can work on this at work.
another side note, for the second series of this comic, the drivers are going to leave there home state and go throughout NE before going on an adventure outside the country.... so I was looking to get some "teams" together that were based on some ppl from the forums, are there any actual groups that are in NH, CT,VT, ME, MA? that all have a sticker in common, something like that? Trying to go for some depth and realism here
