04 STI - stuck cup holder

the one that you press to open, right under the dash..is stuck closed.

any ideas on how to open it without scratching the area around the dash??

Is it sticky or is something cought in it? If somethings cought your best bet is taking the facing around the climate controls/radio out and the bottom of that holder sould be exposed enought for you to play around with. Removing the radio will expose the whole under side of the holder.

OH NICE! I need a new stereo and plan to get one soon (my stupid crappy one is shot) so when I replace it I can just fix it then?

Sounds like the car is totalled. Drop it off at my house and i will dispose of it for you. :lol:

Battor's idea makes sense. i would wait and pull the radio, then work on it from there. Also, a little blue painters tape around the edge can help keep scratches away if you go prying on it.

Pulling the dash apart is VERY easy. It'll take you 5 screws and 7 minutes total.

Try squirting some cleaning fluid in there first. If _anything_ gets on the track the cup holder slides on, it will stick. And in the cold, the sticking gets even worse. :(

that happened in my 04 wrx I just took a pocket knife and pried it out. It starts to happen more and more well atleast mine did.

I am going to wait until I pull the stereo and see.. it seems more like it is jammed up on the inside than like it is "sticky stuck"
(I dont really use it cause its useless and spills everything but I know that now that its stuck im going to need it)

This is true but if your not careful you can leave goudges in the upper part. I had that problen with an older impreza. It ended up being coffee hardening around the seem. I'd try a moist cloth first so that you don't chance water dripping onto the top of the cd player

i have also had the stuck cup holder issue on my 04 but i fixed it!!!! when u remove it if i remember correctly if u remove the cup holder from the slide u will notice a foam piece...remove it...while ur in there clean any dirt or anything eles out of there...next take shanitzue grease and lube up some the contact areas...this grease is white but when rubbed in turns clear...put it back together and you shouldnt have any problems...i did this to mine and it works everytime now and hasnt got stuck since i have done this. try it let me know how it works hope that helps

Mine was like that when i bought it, Someone simply popped the clock panel off and you can get to the back of the cupholder from there, very simple.
