i was outside of work and heard the whole thing and it didn't sound bad, but 2 were seriously injured and taken to the hospital, and a 7 year old boy was killed.

i dont know exactly what happend, but it sounded like someone ran a red light and go clobbered.

woodbury ave was closed from 5 til 9 last night it was so bad.

Hmm, didn't hear anything about it. I'll check in with my connections of Portsmouth Fire/Rescue and Police.

Talked to my buddy, seems there is more to the story then reported thus far but he didn't want to comment on the phone with me, a little busy. Think he might be coming by my place tonight for a beer. He'll tell me then.

I'd be willing to bet it was partially due to the paving. Perhaps there was some confusion since it was just paved and there is no lines painted yet?

I was over in Portsmouth last night around 5, just as it happened. I was in the mall and heard sirens but I wasnt at that part of the mall to see anything. We took the highway there/back to keep away from construction cuz we were in Russell's car (and saw George btw).

I feel so bad for that family. It could have easily been one of us. Stuff like that makes me not want to drive anymore.

Stuff like that just makes me not trust those other drivers even more!

that's too bad, especially about the little boy, my niece is 8 and my nephew is 4, that makes me hurt inside for that family

sigh... if they werent busy pulling people over for 10 over on i95, maybe they could post a cop at that intersection since it sounds like it is problematic

That's why when I drive I always look at the potential for what that person can do... someone getting on the highway, they are tailgating the car really bad in front of them... I say good chance they are going to instantly jump 2 lanes... if I am in a funny spot, they are going to slug me, so you are ready for it...

That's one thing that peeves me, traffic is dynamic... just because you have the right away doesn't mean you toss common sense out the window and not look or assume someone else will stop... ahh well, end my mini rant... hate to see people lose lives needlessly.

Exactly what Chris said -- defensive driving techniques:

That's pretty easy to say after the fact  . That's a fairly uneducated statement, no offense.

First of all I-95 is patrolled by State Troopers in NH and Maine State Police in Maine. NH State Troopers have no jurisdiction in towns with their own police departments (i.e. 95% of towns in NH, which also includes both Portsmouth and Newington). There is no correlation between Troopers pulling you over for 10 over the speed limit and the accident that took place at that intersection.

Now if you understood the workings of a Police Department you'd also know how much it would cost the town to post one of their Police Officers there at that intersection all day and night just because of peoples ignorance when driving. The intersection itself is not a problem, it's the drivers who travel through it.

Just like speeding on the highway isn't a problem, it's the drivers inability to pay attention that causes laws to be made about how fast you can drive. If people showed a little more concern for how they drive and less about what radio station they're on, or how their make-up looks, or who they're talking to on the phone, then there would certainly be less accidents which would result in fewer restrictions on traffic flow. Oh, and add plain stupidity to the previous list, which is a blanket statement for tailgating, weaving in and out of lanes, last minute off-ramp decisions and other ridiculously moronic things I see on a daily basis.

Let me put it to you this way, you wouldn't give your kid some chocolate chip cookies if they didn't finish their dinner would you? Same principle is behind the traffic laws. When people can show that they are aware of their actions, and the consequences of those actions on the road then perhaps that will prove that they are responsible enough to have restrictions lifted on them.

It is something I do believe in not because in restricts you but because it protects those who I know and love. Don't wear your seatbelt all you want but if you are traveling on the road and are exceeding the speed limit and tailgating someone I know and end up killing them, you better hope the cops lock you up behind bars before I can get to you.

DISCLAIMER: I do drive in excess of the speed limit as well when conditions and traffic is at an all time minimum. I do not tailgate, nor will I speed in high traffic situations. Lastly, I only tend to drive in excess of the speed no more then 8 mph unless the situation calls for more speed (i.e. to pass a weaving tractor trailer). Be aware that State Police in both Maine and NH typically will not pull you over for less then 10mph over unless they want to investigate another possible crime at the same time, or you're the only one on the road.
