I just got my legacy on the road yesterday. Its a 96 brighton wagon 5 speed with 188k. Ive got a cone filter on it but its all stock for now. Last night i was ripping down some back roads and doing some rallying. I need more power! The last two subies ive owned one was a 01 2.5rs and the last was a 93 legacy turbo. I love the turbo power but i dont have the money for that right now. I loved the torque of both the 2.2t and 2.5L. I was thinking of doing a 2.5L swap but dont know whats involved. Ive heard it will bolt in but dont know about the wiring.
thanks

You'll need the harness, ecu, motor and exhaust components :)
Squeethebee will probably chime in here in a few. I believe he did this very swap :)

Ive read about people running with the 2.2 harness and ecu. Or are they running the phase 2 2.2L?

ive used the ej22 harness on the ej25 and ran it that way. worked fine had to exstend a couple of the plugs 4 the sensors.

But what phase engine 1 or 2? Ive been looking at nasioc and rs25 but they dont say if its 1 or 2.

If you have a brighton, isn't it a 1.8?
I did the swap with JUST the motor. Swapped the 1.8 intake manifold harness over onto the 2.5, everything but the TPS plugged right in. Ran stock ECU, only downside was it limited my revs to 6k, instead of 6.5k. Since 1.8's are dual port exhaust, I ran the stock exhaust out of my 2.5 heads. BTW, I dropped a DOHC 2.5 into a 94 Impreza L. 55% horsepower increase in a possible night if you work fast enough... not bad at all.

Ive got a legacy brighton sorry. So if i could get a 2.5L its pretty easy to swap than. Did you use the 1.8 tps? I know i will have to get a dual port header cause mine is single. Looks like im gonna have to start gathering parts.

Ask around on here, I'm sure members have the parts you need :)

Oh, if its a legacy I am not sure. I have a 96 legacy as well, but if you have the 2.2, you will only gain 25hp from a whole motor swap, and lose probably the most reliable motor subaru ever made. I would look into just slightly modding your 2.2 if I were you.

+1 on reliable.
He could for the short term though drop in the 2.5 and then go over the 2.2. Trying to figure out if that's what is gonna be the plan on a budy's 01'.

Yeah, but for the cost and complexity of doing a swap, especially not a plug and play swap, for ~20 hp, is it really worth it?

I thought the 2.5 had 165hp and the 2.2 had 130hp? The phase 2 2.5 i thought where just as reliable as the 2.2? If i keep the 2.2 what should i do to?
Thanks for all the help

2.2s are 140hp, and I still wouldn't call the phase 2 2.5 super reliable, at least headgasket wise.
As for mods, a header, highflow cat, and cat-back exhaust. Maybe look into buying some SOHC 2.5 heads as I hear they flow better, are dual port which should make finding a header easier, and have cams readily available. You could have a banging little 2.2 with some Delta 2000 equipped 2.5 heads and a header back.

Awesome! Maybe i will find a 2.2 and build it than just swap it when its done. What kind of power will it have with the heads cams and exhaust? I used to have a 01 2.5rs coupe. That is what im going for is try to make the wagon like that car.

Ive got a legacy so im going to put an outback front bumper and hood. I wanted an impreza but i got a good deal on my car. I paid $200 for it. Its a 96 legacy brighton with 188k 2 little rust spots new brakes exhaust and struts. All it needed was a clutch and tires. So far ive swapped in a gauge cluster with a tach legacy turbo front seats and cone filter.

^^^2.5 SOHC head gaskets, expect to replace every 15-60k miles depending on your upkeep of your coolant/oil changes/driving habits. big range I know......it's what I see everyday. I'm super stupid when it comes to my oil/coolant changes. I have almost 60k on my car, and it hasn't even started to weep at the head gaskets. I've seen them leak as early as 12k. I change my coolant every 20k, and do triple oil changes at every 3k........don't ask.

SPAZ! JK Eric. A 2.5 will always yeild more than the 2.2. I've got a great thread saved on NASIOC somewhere. I'll have to look it up at some point. Just keep in mind, especially on the NA H4's when you push around your powerband with intake and exhaust and such it still comes out of somewhere else. Plus just doing bolt ons without some kind o change to engine manegment will sap the longevity of the engine and what it's actually capable of.
Eric can attest to the difference of getting his Legacy tuned.

it's not tuned yet. ;) waiting on the folks at romraider to make a new release. mdungelman would be the authority as far as that goes.
