I'm dropping the fozzies the tranny this weekend and I was j/w if anyone had any difficulties doing this and if so does anyone have any advice, tips, tricks, or any other pointers to give me a heads up on what to expect. I will be having a mechanicly inclined friend helping me out but neither of us have ever dropped a subaru tranny. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! :D

Why drop trans instead of pulling motor?

^ I don't see how that's less work

No? You'd rather pull driveshaft and axles, then refill transmission when your done? With the motor you pull radiator (obviously), 3 fuel lines, unplug a few electrical connections, 6 exhaust nuts, 2 engine mount nuts, take out starter and unbolt trans(same even if you did it the other way), pull the motor forward in the bay, and change the clutch on the back of motor. It's supposed to save a few hours, plus you don't have to get the car up high enough to drop transmission fully out, or heave it back into position, you let the engine hoist do all the work!

You know, written out, it seems like more work:lol: It's really not though, pulling a motor takes like an hour.

Ed I see your point and I agree with ya on pulling the motor!

Randy, it would, but that seems like a much more specialized tool than most would have. I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that pulling the motor forward in the bay if the quicker way to do it, especially for the DIYer in the garage.

Berge, even with a turbo in the bay, as you would have, I see it being easier.

like ed said its way easier and quicker to pull the motor. i've done it many times. i've done it both ways and droping the tranny is a pita takes like 4hrs. where it takes 2hrs tops to pull the motor.

Thank you! I've always had more trouble squeezing a trans back in place than popping a motor back in.

It's also WAY easier to wiggle a motor back onto a trans, then the other way around!

Motor it is!!! I pulled my car in the garage last nite and to be honest, I was really not looking forward to dropping that big bastard of a tranny. So I am gonna go a get a start on it now!

Here it is 520am and I just got back from the test drive :D Runs pretty good but I may need a new tranny mount and some other bushings cuz the drivetrain is quite clunky. Other that, it starts out smoothly and down shifts are pretty smooth too. Dont worry I babied it lolz

That was a pain in the dick!!! Aligning the tranny studs and trying to get the motor mounts back in place all at the same time was a duezzy too. So after a few fails my friend and I got fed up and took a quick road trip to our buddies house to steal his motor hoist. Way easier!!!!! :D:D:D

Its funny you say that cuz right after we got it on the ground and got ready to start it I was like, "hold up dogbone!"
Ever since I had the car it has always made that noise. Its hard to describe without hearing it but it almost sounds like a loud clunky vibration  It only does it when you start moving and when you downshift. (EX: downshifting from 3rd to 2nd to make a turn as clutch is released into 2nd) I will crawl underneath the car later on and check the trans bushing and the rear diff.
