just curious if you could be more specific

what exactly happened here?

did you go into 3rd thinking it was 5th or whatever,

what actually happened?

this can't have happened on a normal shift :unamused:

I'm sure he'll chime in later once he's home from work, but basicly he was crusing in 3rd, romped on the gas, then bye bye teeth on 3rd gear. No mis-shift involved as far as I know.

really?

that doesn't make any sense with only 300ft/lbs torque

if the teeth were fully engaged before he gunned it - this should NOT have happened

there's got to be more to it than that :spin:

You can break the trans with stock power. His power didn't really have anything to do with it.

He wasn't full throttle...

He shifter from 2nd into 3rd. Once in 3rd gear....

Was about 70% throttle in 3rd gear around 16lbs of boost if memory serves me and bang!!! C-Ya later 3rd gear...

Ill have evoeater chime in as he was riding in the passenger seat when this happened...No, this shouldn't have happened but it did.

I was literally coasting in 3rd gear for a good 5-8 seconds after leaving my high beams on for someone by accident. I then got on it in 3rd gear and at around 18psi, 75% through the pull it went. Dyno is a Dyno Dynamics @ DSG, reads very low comparred to most, but no, its not huge TQ...

Back to work. I am kinda happy it happened now, loving the PPG's!!!

better than OEM. No joke. Everything seems so much tighter and more direct. Just hear a strange noise and get looks...

Got to drive Chad's car tonight and love it!!!

I think it is very daily driable easily. I have 2 children and would gladly put the PPG SC in my car all day long .

1st gear is somewhat loud and sounding like your gear in reverse. Depending on how loud your echaust is from 2nd gear and up they become alot less noticable to the point of hearing your exhaust over the gears. For the $3800.00ish window these are a great deal for new gears and feel very firm compared to the stock gears.

MY REVIEW AFTER 125 MILES:

First off, I would recommend AndrewTech to anyone looking for a sold tranny build. Yes, my transmission took longer than originally anticitpated, but it was well worth it in the long run. It needs to be built correctly in order to work/run and I've never heard anything bad about their work. Quick 1 day shipping point from most of New England too.

My set up:

'07 WRX
PPG Straight Cut 1-4, stock 5th
ACT HDSS clutch kit
ACT Streetlite FlyWheel (14lbs)

Prior set up:

Stock 5 speed
Stock Clutch
Stock Flywheel

First things first. The flywheel was noticabley different, but nothing that hard to get used to rather quickly. The clutch is prefect, slightly grabbier than OEM, but not overerly either. The engagement is the best part of this transmission. It feels so solid going in to gear, no loose side to side play, very direct and smooth. It is not a hard transmission to drive. The "PPG Whine" of the SC gears is IMO way over exagerated. I have had 4 people in my car and only 1 out of the 4 did not like the noise. To me the noise is loudest in first gear, second is probably almost half as loud and from there on up you can hear it, but nothing like the first 2 gears. A conversation can be had with no issues what so ever. Want to listen to music? Just turn it up and the gear noise disappears. The gears also gives a fun and exciting driving expierence and makes you feel like your driving something a little special and not "off the shelf," not to mention the looks you get when you cruise by people. The best thing though is to no longer have to fear int he back of your mind when driving that the stock 5 speed is going to explode at any time.

This is a very streetable daily driver set up, no questions asked. Everyone has their personal opinion, but I feel very confient the vast majority of you reading this would appreciate this set up in their car. The downside is price, yes there are other options out there but for the piece of mind alone it was worth it to me to go all out and not settle on a less expensive gear set. I have yet to beat on it as I have a brand new clutch/FW in and need to give it a few hundred miles to break in, but I can tell its going to be a lot of fun...give me another week or so and I'll report back.

Please, if you have any questions feel free to post and I'll be happy to answer. I'm sure Ill see mot of you in the next few weeks.

I drove it and will admit they are not loud at all and Rob you hit it dead on first gear does sound like your in reverse. The gears are NO different in engagement do to the syncros..THIS IS NOT A DOGBOX!!! The transmission feels brand new as it should and his shifting linkage is all nice and tight make it shift as smooth as butter..

Very nice review. I'll definitely have to hit you up for a ride some time.
I hate to say it but as each day goes by I'm debating more and more just doing something with my transmission sooner rather then later. I haven't had anything bad happen yet, but tonight I got some starter grind for the 2nd or 3rd time, and I managed to break all 4 tires loose today (while going straight). While I know it's nothing related to the transmission, hearing noises like that still scares me, and after realizing that I really am putting down some decent power, I'm just thinking it's better safe then sorry.
I'm gonna start seriously pricing out some options for 6spd vs LGT setup (with 4.11 front & rear ring and pinions) vs PPG's, and may just have to do something this year to put my mind at ease.

Anywhos, grats again on everything worked out, and I'll see you on Sunday (or perhaps I'll stop by the office tomorrow and blare the 130db goodness :D )

I'll be honest, 1st gear on a 6spd is basically useless. I start in second most of the time unless I'm climbing a hill. :(

Yeah i've driven the 6spd a few times and my only real gripe is how short the ratio's are. I like the longer gearing of the 5 spd personally. After driving Chad's car lar night and the solid feel of the PPG's and the $2000.00 saving over the 6spd. I feel the LGT gears will not be strong enough if someone plans on swaping out the turbo for a larger turbo and getting tuned for over 300lbs of tq. I know what my 1st choice is hands down :)

Although the PPG / Andrewtech built 5 spd is a great trans why wasnt a JDM 6 spd an option ? I know all is said and done but a V7 non dccd sti trans swap can be had for around 3200 and you could put it in yourself . or get some friends to give you a hand .

I prefer 5 speed over 6 speed for the type of driving I do. That and I just wanted to go with the PPG's, not sure why, just wanted them.

Yeah I know he liked the longer gears of the 5 speed and liked the idea of getting a new tranny with no miles on it. At the $3800ish price tag he paid all said done he did pretty good. I got to drive his car the following day and love the feel of engagement of the gear box when shifting gears. PPG's SC really impressed me with there set up.
