ok so i decided im finally sick of my car being silent and want some sound. fist off i know it will not sound like a suby at first which is y i have a post for wtb stock cat section from a 2002-2005 RS so i can run borla rep headers and not have cat code and inspection problems.

My question is what muffler and resonator should i use? I have been looking at magnaflow mufflers and i want something similar so it is not very loud. Just a nice sound but not loud!!!! Also being fairly cheap is another problem as i am a broke college student.

suggestions please!!!!

You don't need the 2002-2005 cat section. The difference from 02-05 to 06+ was the change from un-equal length to equal length headers. However with just a cat-back it will still sounds like a Subie just with a tad less burble.

My vote would be for a track pipe (to remove the resonator) and a Stromung axle-back.

i want the boxer rumble!!! borla reps with the cat section and cat-back would be prime!

i was thinking about the wrx header mod that a few ppl have done but dont want to eliminate my primary cat. so idk wat to do right now...

Borla (or replicas it doesn't matter) headers, Some form of a high-flow cat section, test/track pipe (to eliminate the resonator) and any non-melon launcher style axle-back.

That would be my suggestion.

(Just remember that you will need a spacer for your rear 02 sensor to keep a CEL from showing up due to the High-Flow Cat)

I'm going to have to disagree on the whole, "it will still sound like a Subie", because if the boxer rumble is the subie sound, then it won't be that. Burble is a terrible word. Cheers!

My current setup is modified WRX header, Stock cat-section, Stromung cat-back w/ 18" resonator.

doesnt the modded wrx header set up eliminate the first cat??? i thought the first cat was in the exhaust manifold itself... ill have to get under there and look again!

right now im more or less focusing on the cat-back and taking it from there as the funds come! lol

The headers are their own segment (at least on our cars), then a cat section, mid-pipe and then the axle-back.

I'll double check on the modded wrx headers.

And those youtube vids don't capture the sound nearly accurately enough, you'd have to hear it in person.

i did hear it in person wen he had just the cat back and i will tell u those vids do capture it pretty well.... sounds more like and evo-ish sound with the stock EL header. Also i know the previous years were different sections for the exhaust but i believe mine has the primary cat in the header section? i might be wrong tho

Actually, yes they do. :)

You're correct on that. The 1st cat is in the header, the 2nd is in the cat-section.

What was done with my setup:
-The first oxygen sensor is placed a couple inches before the header meets the flange.
-The second sensor is placed after the second catalytic converter. No sensor is needed, but an extension is needed. This setup is working perfectly.

+1 to wrx/lgt manifold. mine has several miles w/ no issues. i did pretty much the same as mdungelman.

no cat codes or anything?? are u running a 02 de-fowler?

im just worried about throwing codes because with my old car i eliminated the primary cat (because it was clogged and didnt want to replace it) and every now and then i would throw a check engine light for cat malfunction

i have been playing with the idea of a tune too but i dont want to void any warrantes becuase i still have my 50k powertrain warrante

idk if wen they plug the car in if they can tell if it has been tuned... or if i needed to bring it to the dealer if i could have the stock map reflashed back on the car so they will never know?

50k? My 06 had a 60k warranty. (not that it mattered cause I hit that in about a year and a half ) Did they start skimping on their warrantys?

Nope, no codes. No de-fouler.
